Eric, you said the poultry plunge is rescheduled to this Saturday, the 16th? Is that correct? I haven't heard anything other than what you said here. If it is.....what time?
Thanks!
Oh my goodness, that Buff took my breath away! I can't imagine what it would be like to see one in person!!!
Are there any breeders in Iowa that you know?

I guess they knew the place to be, Eric! Kinda like Dr. Doolittle? Wow, do you think they belonged to that wood duck family? 13 ducklings? I should tell my husband about them, he LOVES wood ducks. The only thing is that we live in the middle of DNR ground that has three ponds...
Welcome, Jim!
Wow, sounds like a full life....that is wonderful. I grew up on a dairy farm so I know what hard work it is and it never lets up.
I'm from northwest Iowa and kind of new to owning chickens. You can see in my signature what I have.
Oh ya, getting them to go back in in the middle of the day is another story.....
I also trained mine to come to "chick chick chick chick chickeeeeeeee!" lol Then give them some good treat. Then when I need to put them away during the day, they follow me to the coop. Sometimes my two boys...

If they're in the coop and run with the hens, how do we keep their feed apart? Won't the little ones get curious about the "big girl food" and try it? We can put the baby feeder out there, but I don't know they'll stick to it. So...how do other people do it? And for how long?
What I...
I've only had my chickens for a year but have never had a problem with that.
When we first put our chickens out in the coop we kept them locked up in the coop for two weeks, that way they knew that it was "home". Then when we let them out to free-range during the day they just naturally went...

So that Buttercup is a rooster? Would he mate with large fowl chickens? And if he did, what would you end up with? Large fowl chicks or banty chicks? I would love to have a rooster that crows out here in the country.....but I don't want a bunch of bantys in my flock, they just...
mom'sfolly :
For all you young women out there....have your kids early or very late. I had my kids sort of late, mid-thirties. This gives our family the wonderful experience of having puberty and menopause going on at the same time. Nobody warned me!!!!! This constitutes poor planning on...

So I best be getting him registered? Things tend to slip my mind since I'm off work for the summer (lunch lady)....you'd think I was on vacation or something....
I'd better dig up that pamphlet I saw it in or just go ahead and call the extention office.
We have something going on...
What darling pictures, Amy!! She is a doll!
Eric, I see that you are putting on a chicken learning session for 4H. My oldest son recently joined 4H and wants to show chickens, eventually. Not this year....too soon. He'll probably be coming to your session, as far as I know now. He is...

Sorry, Eric, but what are you hatching there? I was missing off of BYC for quite a while so kinda missed out.....if you don't mine re-explaining.

Four chicks are six weeks old (the RIR's) and eight chicks I just picked up the other day, so they're just a matter of days old.
I don't think I've ever seen my banty go broody..... Not in the way my sex-link did, anyway.
Quote:
No, no more broody's. All my chickens are sex-links and no one else has gone broody and I don't expect them too.
It's really disappointing for my two sons (ages 10 and 12). They were sooooo excited about watching this whole process.
Guess we'll have to have patience until my all...
Uh-oh. Bad news.
My husband went out this morning and my mama hen was not on her nest, and he said all the eggs were pushed away from each other out to the edges. I just have a feeling that she's done for.
She's a black sex-link, which I understand is unusual for them to go broody in the...
