Here is a lousy pic of daddy. He is a standard cochin crossed with something. He's blue with red on his back. (Not sure of the proper term, sorry!)
Possible mamas are RIR or RIR/EE crosses. Pretty sure the solid color chick's mom was a EE/RIR cross because the egg was a light green (those...
Grrr!
Ordered some eggies for my next go around and they were shipped Thursday. Approximate receiving date according to the tracking number was supposed to be today. My PO closed at noon. I started calling around 11, no one answered. I guess my eggs will have to wait until Monday. They...
I have been trying to find a post that I think was posted in this section, but I can't seem to find it!
There was a user here who had a young (around 2 months I think) silkie and she put it in with her new chicks. She posted a pic of the Silkie with her wings around the babies. It was...
I went into lockdown today. I tried to candle, but couldn't see into the egg anymore. I had been seeing development. I couldn't even see the air cell. I was REALLY hoping to see that to make sure that it was big enough.
Humidity was around 25-45% the entire 1-18. It was hard to keep...
Fully enclosed and cheap probably do not go together, but I thought I'd ask!
Right now my big birds are in a run that is made up of t-posts and 4 foot high horse wire fencing. Thier only predator protection has been tree cover and yard dogs. In the several months of them being out there...
I'm on day 13. Candled last night and out of 6, I'm thinking there's something going on in only 2, MAYBE 3 of them. The reason I think this is because I can't see into 2 of them and the third, the yolk part looks like it's taking up most of the egg.....so I'm willing to let that one try...
I only have 1 or maybe 2 eggs that are actually developing out of 6 in my Brinsea. The auto turner did a great job at turning them at first, but for the past couple of days, the one egg that I know for sure has something in it isn't turning with the rest of them. Should I start hand turning it...
I've read and read and read on here that they should be fine, but I worry!!
They are a few days short of 8 weeks and are fully feathered, with the exception of a few of the silkies....they still have a bit of fluff on thier heads.
Thier coop has roosts and copius amounts of hay for...
I had NO IDEA that 30 little bantam chicks could produce SO MUCH DUST!!!!!! It has covered everything in my house that doesn't have a door blocking it off, despite repeated attempts to vaccum (and I have a Dyson!!) I have not had to worry about the smell, noise, or anything else that I was...
My dear sweet hubby had gotten up with the kids to get them ready for the bus and was letting me sleep in. Usually I get up due to all the activity anyway, but this morning, after hearing what sounded like one of my brooder babies choking on something, I jumped out of bed to check on them...
Ok, so my favortie little cochin cockeral (who is 1 day shy of 7 weeks in this pic) was just having chill out time with me on the sofa earlier when I noticed HE HAS FIVE TOES on EACH FOOT!
Why I haven't noticed this before is beyond me.
He looks like a cochin to me.....
Granted I couldn't keep my hands off and tried it on day 3.
It's my first attempt to hatch anything. I figure I've got a pretty good bater (Brinsea mini Advance) and calibrated my hygrometer like a good girl. Got eggs from a friend (which might be the issue) and aside from the candling...
I'm adding the finishing touches to my coop and run before my brooder babies will (FINALLY ) be going outside.
I want to add some "playground" type roosts for the teenagers in the run. I know the silkies probably won't use them, but I'm hoping the Cochins will! Anyway, what is a good...
....can I assume that they are boys at this point?
I have 10 Silkies from Welp, and 2 of them are turning red in the comb. I know that doen't mean that I have 8 hens, but I figured since silkies were hard to sex, them getting red this early was a pretty sure sign at least those two were boys...
Out of the 9 I have there are 2 that look different. The other 7 are all about the same size, comlpetely white with yellow legs. 3 out of the 9 are roos (I'm 87% sure, anyway!) They are about 4 months old or so.
This roo has always had a stray black feather, but has just recently developed...
I'm stoked! After searching on ebay and finding a nice looking LG with all the bells and whistles, I decided to do a search in here and make sure I was getting the best one.
Glad I did that!! No LG for me! Haha!
I got the Brinsea Mini Advance. It's my Christmas present from my ever patient...
