My little Frances Ann is being attacked by some of my Barred Rock pullets. I put the two I saw attacking her into tractor during the day & into cage inside hen house at night. Frances Ann is smaller & one of two pullets left from another flock. The Barred Rocks are a year younger, and were...
I'm not sure what is wrong with one of my hens. We found tiny egg in nest box. The egg was only about 1 inch long, the shell was rough in texture, and the shell seemed thicker than most shells. I have not cracked it open so I don't know what the inside is like. Has anybody else had this happen...
One of my hens laid a tiny egg yesterday. I have 7 hens. Two are in their second year of laying, and 5 started laying this winter. All have been laying large eggs. This egg is about inch long. It has a rougher surface - like tiny little grains on the shell. It also seems like the shell is...
I want to buy some I.D. Bands in assorted colors for my chickens. I can only find sources for buying in large 1000 piece lots. I only have 7 chickens & would like to find a source where I could buy only 100 or less. Does anyone know a source?

I recently added 4 new younger chickens to my flock. I had the younger ones on grower pellets, and the older girls are on layer food. Now they all go after each others food. The younger chickens are not yet full grown. They are about 4 months old. Will it hurt them if they eat the layer food?
Lacey my little Wynadotte pullet (Approx 7 months) has been puffed up just setting around for a few days new. I thought it was the cold because we had been having extremely cold weather, but this morning she had yellowish poop stuck the feathers near her vent, and there was runny poop on the...
We got our first egg today!! One of the girls laid an egg on the roost. (Now to train them to use the nest.) The egg had frozen & cracked, but it still it very exciting. I think I'll go put one of my antique glass eggs in the nest to encourage them. I didn't expect them to start laying yet...
This has been going on for 4 days, and she seem worst. I've given her the raw ACV in her warer & at first she was drinking, but sour smell never has gone away. Now she won't drink. She would only try 2 little crumbs of oily bread & then refused to eat more. I have been massaging her crop gently...
After i read up a bit more on impacted crops I think that's what's wrong with my 5 month old Buff Op. I thought an impacted crop meant is was hard, but I guess it can be enlarged & soft. Last night I massaged her crop & held her with her head downwards over the toliet & all kinds of brownish...
I don't know if the cold or something else but my little Buffy's feather's are all puffed up like she is cold or sick. & she is just standing around. The others are running around as usual. She is drinking & eating, but not eating a lot. They have pellets in their feeder all the time, and scatch...
When I went out to open the chicken coop this am I found my pretty little Emma dead on the floor. Yesterday she seemed fine, and the rest of the girls seem ok. I couldn't see any marks or anything. She was about 3 months old, and very small. The other chicken are different breeds 2 Buff Orps...
I was told that the folks I purchased my chicks from have a mite infection, and I'm afraid my chicks might have them. I have had the chicks for about 4 weeks & they are now eight weeks old. I have checked them for mites especially around the vent, but I can't see anything, but my vision isn't...
This morning I found bloody smears in my chicks' dropping. Just smears & not very bright. I just got this chicks Wednesday evening, and I showed the woman I brought them from a sample of the droppings. She confirmed that it was coccidiosis, and told me how to treat it. I purchased Duramycin-10...
I just got back from picking up my new chicks. After having my first batch turn out to be all roos I brought this batch from a woman who got hatchery sexed chicks so I stand a good chance of having pullets this time. I decided to go for an assortment this time. I got 2 Buff Ops, 2 Speckled...
The last two of my roosters went to a new home Monday. That was the last of the six barred rock "pullets" that turned out to be all roosters! We are cleaning out coop & run & plan to get 4-6 new pullets. My dilema is that if I can only get some that 4 -5 weeks old I'll be waiting until winter...
Ittie & Maude went in the chicken tractor for the first time today. It was quite something to catch them & put them in the tractor, but once they were out on the grass they seemed to enjoy it. They were soon clucking happyly & eating the fresh grass. I left them in the tractor for several hours...
Another one out of the six pullets I got at the swap turned out to be a Roo, and it was little Ladybird! Guess a new name is called for here! I heard a crow Sunday morning directly after finding new homes for my Roos. I didn't suspect Ladybird, I was sure it was Maude or Itty Bittie, but this...
I'm so happy! I've been trying to re-home my Barred Rock Roos. I was told they were sexed as pullets when I got them in May & 3 out of 6 turned out to be Roos! I posted them on Craig's list, but so many people had free roos to give away, and I had no luck. Today I took the to the chicken swap &...
How far from the wall should my roosts be? My chickens are B.R. s. Also what is a good height? This is a walk in hen house so they could be fairly high. I plan to have removable dropping boards underneath the roost so if I put the roost at about 3 1/2 to 4 feet with the board about a foot under...
I was awake but only just when I heard a noise from the backyard - I took me a minute to realized & I ran to the window in time to hear it again Someone learning to crow! So much for buying all pullets! I just hope its only one, but there a couple that are much bigger than the rest. I'd keep...
