I received my splash Silkies last Friday. I ordered 15 and they sent 16, I lost 1 yesterday not sure exactly why. I’ve had a few pasty butts to clean up every day, it’s not covering vent just sticking to fluff. Never dealt with this on any of my own hatched chicks so chalking it up to shipping stress. I’ve turned the heat down and added a little tiny bit of grit too. Curious how you sexed 5 week old Silkies? In the picture I have 4 of my serama chicks in with them as they were a week older but still smaller.

Looking nice! I also had the pasty butt problem on my silkies, never had it happen from my personal hatches either. After a few days the pasty butt went away but I continued to check for the first 2 weeks.

You will be able to tell sex a lot earlier with these hatchery silkies. My males are very vocal, their bodies feel heavier and more tense, wattles are slightly thicker/larger than the females, and the combs have defined ribs on the males.

The females are a lighter weight (some more than others), most werent as vocal, and their combs have no ribs/some combs are almost nonexistent.

I wasnt 100% positive about 3 of them, but overall you'll be able to sex them earlier than your show bred silkies.

Well I say females, I guess I should say I have about 10 I know for sure are boys then the rest are either females or not as masculine small combed males.

The Crele OEGB are the most docile and friendliest birds Ive ever owned. What they lack in quality they shine in personality. Best buy from cackle yet. The dominiques are descent standard run of the mill hatchery stock, very docile for bannies.

They are looking nice. Mine are doing well 14 are healthy and active. I have one that has a bad leg issue that I just am not sure there is anything more I can do for it. I think it was a brooder injury as I check all of the chicks legs and feet when I put them in the brooder, unless it hid under the brooder plate every time I came in and sat to watch them. It has one leg that it does not use and sticks out to the side and the toes are now all curled. I think I am going to have to put it down as it just cant keep up with the rest of the flock.
I did make my first cull to with 5 going to a new home. Their combs were getting a pink color to them and I want to keep my combs dark or they were a little lighter in color than I wanted, so I did found a nice pet home for them. The rest are going to be so hard to decide because they are feathering in nicely.

They are looking nice :thumbsup I chose the best 2 males and 5 females, but I will probably only breed one roo over the best 2 or 3 hens and hatch a lot next year and cross the offspring over the 2nd roo I saved. I hope you enjoy yours as much as us.

Dominiques: Got rid of the cock in the cage due to aggression and over half my hens due to type and size. I kept the uncaged roo and the best 5 hens.

Silkies: Kept a blue Male and splash male, the blue has split wing, splash is on small side :/ kept 2 splash hens and 1 blue. The blue was the best hen but got ran over, so will only keep these as pets and sell any of their chicks as pets.

Oegb crele: Since my better male was killed by a raccoon, I have 1 male left and I kept 5 females. 2 have nice barring other 3 had some good traits. Will use these with my black ameraucana bantams for a crele project.

Pics attached!

Yeah I had a great buff silkie hen and she almost had aqua legs. Her name was Ginger and she was truly wonderful.

In fact I don't think I've ever seen a photo of a buff silkie with true melanistic skin.

So enjoy you littles for the wonderful little silkies they are. Buff is a hard color to perfect especially in silkies from what I've read. I will say this though as much as I love all my silkies checking on legs for anything out of the orpordin or bumblefoot etc is a million times easier on a lighter colored leg. LOL

i know this was from a while ago but here is a buff Silkie I had and it’s feet definitely weren’t black but at least they had some color to them, they looked blue 😂 the ones I got from cackle a few days ago have half with yellow toes and black skin or one that looks really nice with black skin and black down in its buff. So probably a smutty buff I reckon 🤷‍♀️
