Dear All,
I am new to BYC and owning chickens! Our new girls (hopefully girls ;)) arrived last Tuesday, April 23rd. Upon arrival, 2 did not look good at all. We quickly brought their core temperature up under a heat lamp, gave them water through an eye dropper and separated them from the group. Within an hour they perked up. The smaller one of the 2 needed a bit more TLC and she received a vitamin/electrolyte solution, every hour for a total of 5 doses. By the evening they were back with the group. I awoke the next morning to the lil girl motoring around the brooder, eating and drinking water on her own. It's been 10 days, and they are all doing fantastic! I have learned sooooo much about chick behavior. I will post some pics, Good luck everyone.
Cheers,
Susan from NY

I am glad to hear that your babies are doing well! Chicks can do some pretty silly stuff!

Sigh.... my babies are all growing up! First night in the big girl coop... I think it bothers me more than it bothers them.. they are sleeping and I am not. Was gonna takea pic but didn't want to upset them. Maybe tomorrow night...

Just got my babies all situated in their brooder. It's a very cold day here in OK! I'm freaking out but they all seem to be doing great! They added 11 Roos to my order for warmth... I have NO idea what I'm going to do with them all lol

Adorable new babies, and welcome to the new chicken parents!

Jeanna, I completely understand where you're coming from! I worried silly the first few nights, but once I realized how much happier they were and how QUICKLY they adjusted to being outside full-time, it was easy for me to sleep again. ;-)

BScott - all those roos make good dinners that you can raise and feed diets that make you feel comfortable in consuming from them later. I'm a firm believer in "you are what you eat," so my extras will go to a humane slaughterhouse when the time comes. I'm not going to like it, but I have no need for 3 roos of two breeds (maybe 4 of one), 2 of another, and 1 of the fourth breed I have of my large fowl.

I'm going to *tentatively* say this here - I have one of my self-blue OEG bantam hens going broody as we speak on golf balls and 2 eggs! We MAY have babies soon! I've also made contact with someone who bred Lavender Ameraucanas and showed them for a long time that no longer has the time to do so - and MAY be getting a roo and 3 hens so I can start breeding those! I'm learning more and more about genetics and breeding, showing, etc. - and my boys are over the moon about getting into showing. I hope, I hope, I HOPE this comes through!
