Pony Sunday

Mustang Sally

Sally is a 22 yr old Pony-of-the-Americas mare born 05 April 2000 at 7;45pm Yes I was there for the event

She has some health issue as Appaloosa horses are prone to. She has a metabolic disorder requiring medication daily, and she has COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) just like humans get! She also gets medication for that. The metabolic disorder causes horses to not shed their winter coat hair properly and they need to be clipped so they don’t overheat. And to make them look snazzy instead of shaggy old nags.

So a couple times a year in the spring and summer I give Sally a do over and today was the day! I’ve been trying to get this done for a while now but whenever I have time it’s sweltering and she is sweating so that I can’t use the clippers - hard to clip damp hair on a horse!

Today was a bit cooler so I dragged her in and out her fan on her to keep her cool and then got everything ready:
Clippers
Coolant spray for clipper blades
Oil for the blades and the clipper motor
Brushes to brush and clean Sally before clipping
And for me a nylon jacket, ski pants, rubber boots and toque - nylon stops the horse hair from sticking to me - it’s miserable stuff when it gets in your eyes and hair, and inside your clothes.

The chickens upon seeing me in this get-up totally freaked out! They ran screaming from me - until I dragged out the treats hahaha.

So chickens settled, equipment ready, pony ready…. Commence clipping!

After clipping most of the body hair coat, and trimmed up her leg hair like every lady needs

All that hair came off her!

Our temps are climbing up this week too. We were high of 80 yesterday, expecting high of 92 today and 100 tomorrow. Night temps of 55-60 which is normal for us too. 30° temp swing are the summer norm, sometimes our winter temps are only 2° day/night.
*edit* I mean our temp difference can be 2°

Having it cool off at night is something I delight in. I'm just glad those temp swings aren't the winter daily too.

I got some pony Sunday Pics walking home Tuesday evening after plugging in the deep cycles DH forgot, and wrapping the remaining sausage from the market Donny wasn’t impressed with the sausage smell on my hands, I tried to give him some scritches but he was not thrilled

That’s when Isla decided to come straight at me (she’s doesn’t like me much) and I decided that I should get on with the walking. She was totally going to whack me with her head.

I think he’s pretty throughly entrenched out here on the west coast… but yes I do think I detect a wee bit of that Newfie character under there.

I’m hoping that it’s a good thing!

Such beauty though.
But giving them a scratch is not worth getting butted for , be careful

She passed. I'm thankful she was unconscious most of the time and I hope she finds the Cherry tree that bears cherries forever.

I'm sorry she's passed and that you both have lost a dear friend. She had a wonderful life with you, the total opposite of her life before, a godsend for her.
