I was quite concerned and worried for a couple of weeks now. I am thrilled she is molting. I'm sure she is not. šŸ˜†
Now seems like a lovely time to take off the down jacket, as long as she hides in the shade. Several times over the last few days in the evening, when I peel off the soaked layers and attempt to air dry, the chickens have started to go off and alarm. More often than not I have utter the phase ā€œduck pants, I don’t care if some trespasser is scarred for life by the blinding whiteness of my legsā€ and just run out to check them… šŸ˜‚ good thing my neighbours are a solid mile away.

Love it. If Hattie has a heavy molt in August I wonder if she will need to wear sunblock!

We made it through the night without the heavy storms that were predicted. We are still under flash flood watches until Sunday evening though. It is raining though and has all night, a light drizzle. In other news, Chiquita's 2nd egg has pipped! I checked on it when I let the flock out at 7 this morning and while no pip I could hear cheeping inside. I just came in from egg collecting and checked again and found the pip. She has her first chick already eating well. When I went in the coop it was out from under her and she saw me and growled and it ran for cover. I sat there talking to her for a minute as she's puffed up and growling. Curiosity got the better of it, it was supposed to be hiding but instead poked it's head out of her butt feathers to stare at me. I put one hand close to her head so she could peck at while I petted the new little one's head. I will go out later and get pictures after the 2nd chick hatches. I do not want to disturb her too much right now and have her accidently squish the egg.

Exciting! (I mean about the chicks not about the flash floods). So glad you were all OK through the night.

Hypertension: Xzit is broody (again) she’s setting on two eggs, that are not her own!
Why Xzit, and why now? :barnie :idunno
Xzit will be your chronic broody. You will have 2 options with her it seems. Break her every couple weeks or give in again and bring her back into the house with her 2 eggs and let her try again. I have a few like that. I'm on round 2 of breaking Raven after she raised her chick. Some hens just want to be mothers. It is their calling.

Raven is doing that too? I swear, Xzit will be the end of me!

Not only Raven, Corona is also broody for the first time and is proving a nightmare to break. Corona has been this way for a week and a half now. I will not relent and give EITHER girl eggs. Butter is also starting to give warning signs she is thinking of joining the broody club. I noticed a line down her chest when she stood up yesterday and checked. She is plucking her feather's darn it.
