I was fortunate enough to watch Maleficent leave the nest on a regular basis while she was broody. I know it was at least twice a day and maybe 3 times. She would come boiling out of the coop. Relive herself, eat, drink, and groom. 15 minutes tops and then she would head back in.

I did not teach her this. No one did. Somehow she knew. Here she is.

Aw... Mal. Exact same beach ball as Cashew. ❤️💔

WOW! Look at that nest!
I know! It is quite a construction wedged between the boxes. Dad often flies in from the side and lands on the domed top and delivers food from above. The whole thing is high up near the ceiling on top of upper cabinets. I am so excited to have live babies!

Talking of broody (not a chicken)
The garage door has been left open a lot recently because it is a convenient place to store tools to build the Chicken Palace. As a result I acquired a broody visitor - and now I have babies!
I think this is Papa bird checking in on the nest and I see two babies and the mother in the nest at the back. She leaves the nest periodically during the day and both parents are back and forth a lot. He seems to sleep elsewhere and she sleeps in the nest.
I am not sure what they are - my current best bet is a Carolina wren. They are quite bold and are around me while I am working around the garage.
They must be wrens....see the W on their wall? That's their monogram. :D

Very cool. Looks like a Carolina Wren to me. Here is from my bird watching book. It will be fun for you to watch them grow up.

Agree. I listened to the Carolina wren’s voice on the Cornell Ornithology site and it is exactly right. I hope I get to see them fly out of the nest.

Cashew is in full broody mode. I had to pull her out of the nest box panting. Three times. I dipped her legs in a cool bucket, and held her butt up to the fan mister. She’s not impressed. Now the coop door is closed and she sitting on an outside perch grooming her feathers.

When I approached, she became a screeching beach ball. Not the best day for this, considering the heat.
Screeching beach ball” :lau! I love it!
