I went out to check on the girls and we are now up to 4. Bunny has had 2 more hatch. Raven has from what I can tell 2 more eggs pipped.
Now for what everyone is waiting for....pictures.

Gosh, they are so darn cute! :love :love

You should submit the first one of Raven looking at her chick for POW, what a precious photo!

My mom sent me a few pics of Strider she had from when he was young.

I think he was only a week or two old in this first one.

And this was on his 2nd birthday, right before I rode him the first time.

Who is the little bantam? He's adorable!
That's my rooster Théo, he's a mutt cross bantam. And unfortunately he's not adorable at all 😱.

Thanks for the welcome.

A few bits of “Strider Trivia”.
He was almost a firecracker, but was born on July 3 instead of July 4. (Yes that is late in the year to plan to have a foal, explained in next item.)

I wasn’t going to breed his dam, especially not at that time of year. But some people I knew had a young paint stud they were breeding for the first time, and wanted to prove he would “throw color” on solid colored mares. And they loved the look of my little quarter horse mare, so offered me a really good deal on the stud fee considering his bloodlines ($200).

His color was a total shock to me. His dam was a dark buckskin, and his sire a red dun paint. Imagine my surprise when Strider arrived as a black and white paint. Turned out his dam was homozygous black, and Strider was negative for both the buckskin and dun genes.

When I traced his bloodlines, turned out he was a distant descendent of Man o’ War on his dam’s side. Can’t remember exactly but it was something like 9-10 generations.

His dam was barely tall enough to be considered a horse instead of a pony. We used to say she was 14 hands if she had shoes on and was past due for a trim. 😂
A nice colour surprise ☺️. If I understood right it wasn't his dad that threw in the colour though! What size was he ?
No idea on how they get the blue legs. He's a gold penciled Hamburg. (German breed, I think, but American bred)
I had no clue they came in such colours, we only have them in black and white here (silver).
I need advice on Maggie’s rear end. It is in a shocking state. She is sleeping in the nest box and that combined with her perpetual diarrhea and of course her very fluffy butt is a terrible combination.
I could wash or trim or crumble it off - but I don’t want to handle her too much until she is less like a porcupine. If she keeps sleeping in the box it will get worse and worse.
It is getting cooler so I suppose fly strike is a bit less of a worry.
If her fluff is old she will molt it off naturally, but I am not sure - her fluff might be new feathers.
I am wondering whether to block off the nest boxes and force her to roost. She is perfectly capable of going up the ladder. At least I think she is. And I could always giver her a lift her up and down if she seems to have trouble.
What do you all think?
If she wants to avoid the drama, I suppose you could supervise her going to roost, or carry her once the other two have settled down.
I'm not a fan of forcing them to sleep on the roost when they don't feel like it because, at least for mine, it happens rarely and usually for some good reason. But I suppose you could try it one evening and depending on how she reacts, decide whether you do force her to roost or whether you reopen the box she has chosen ?

Wow, what an adorable colt he was, and handsome as a 'big/bigger' boy :love :love I'm just a tad bit jealous of you...but certainly wouldn't have wanted the heartbreak you suffered later.:hugs:hugs

When they talk about a paint horse throwing color, what they really mean is throw white/pattern. Basically proving that all offspring from that parent will meet the requirements to be considered a paint horse. Strider ended up being around 14.1 hands if I recall correctly. His sire was over 15 hands.

OMG he is GORGEOUS!!!! I don't know anything about horses so I couldn't visualize when you were describing his genetics.
He is the horse equivalent of a Tuxedo cat.

He is cute as a button, though! I love the first pic: sleeping while sitting proud!:)
