How awesome this photo is!!!:love And I love the thought of Maggie 'killing the water' first:lau
Awww - well it is Maggie! Seriously - I must get video of it. Everyone else sort of sips the water off the surface and she definitely stabs!
She also stabs the nipples on the nipple waterer inside the coop part of the Chicken Palace!

Thanks. He was definitely a beautiful boy. And most of the time was well behaved too.

This pic is a little blurry but shows his dam’s color.

If she wants to avoid the drama, I suppose you could supervise her going to roost, or carry her once the other two have settled down.
I'm not a fan of forcing them to sleep on the roost when they don't feel like it because, at least for mine, it happens rarely and usually for some good reason. But I suppose you could try it one evening and depending on how she reacts, decide whether you do force her to roost or whether you reopen the box she has chosen ?
In principle I am with you - let her sleep where she wants. But this happened a while back when she was sick and she got into the habit of going to the nest box. Eventually I blocked it and she roosted from then on even when I unblocked it.
So I am just thinking at some point I need to encourage her to roost and remind her she likes that. Maybe not quite yet.

I went out to check on the girls and we are now up to 4. Bunny has had 2 more hatch. Raven has from what I can tell 2 more eggs pipped.
Now for what everyone is waiting for....pictures.

I was reluctant to set Raven, but, after sitting out there with her for 30 minutes just now I'm so happy I did. While she did adopt a chick earlier in the spring this is her first true hatch. My troublemaker is mesmerized by her chicks. She keeps peeking under herself every few minutes and nuzzling the chicks. I think she was slightly confused at first when the 2nd one hatched. I also think she already has a little troublemaker on her hands. Her first chick keeps coming out from under her and trying to climb all over her. She will gently tuck it back under her only to have it pop out again as soon as she settles down. I will have to keep my eye on that one. Raven gave me fits as a youngster and I think she is due for some payback.

Bookmarked! Those are wonderful! I'm now thinking of trying to make something oriental: phoenix, oriental dragon, oriental lion, Crane, cherry/plum blossoms on some kind of misty mountain background.....long term project....

And the 1st one will likely wind up as a chicken on something.

This is an ocean wavy image depicting the story of Nezha, a kid, fighting the dragon. It is from Chinese mythology and can be found in this ancient novel.

I bet a chicken will look great there. 😆

Tax: Inky is ready to fight.

How did he know?

Branch has really not been on the front porch since the girls started setting. So explain to me how when I came out to check on the girl's progress earlier I find him standing in front of the girls looking in on the chicks. Neither Bunny or Raven seemed upset with him looking in. The chicks had their heads poked out staring at him and he was talking to them. With each new clutch of chicks my girls hatch he amazes me more and more. They may not be his, but that does not stop him from being a attentive dad. I have to say it, he is even better with momma's and chicks then my beloved Drummie was.
