Do not be sorry for me that they are not yellow. I may have wanted it to turn out yellow but I am ok with white. Rosie is not the only one who misses Cricket and her cute Dalmatian spots. Black will always be my favorite color, but, I'm open to other colors in my flock as well. I'm even now planning on getting white silkie eggs in the spring. White mind you, what I would say is my least favorite color in the breed. There is a reason though, she shows her chickens, and has several from her breeding pens being shown. Rosie is interested a little bit in showing chickens. My chosen silkie breeder, white is her best line as far as showing, followed closely by her blacks. That is why I'm splitting my egg order in half for 6 white, and 6 blacks. Now, I know nothing about showing chickens, but if we go that route she offers up advice and help on preparing them for a show. We will have to see what next year brings.
Since you brought up Rosie, how is she doing? Has she ridden (AT A WALK!) again?

Maybe he should have been named Icarus! :love :lau :love

I still would recommend getting them. They are such a joy! However, I would definitely counsel them about secure run & quality coop...with enough space in the run to not need to free range. I do think that they (chickens) need some free-range time to be happy, but I also think that, unless you are willing to take significant losses, free range time must be limited to when you have the time for full diligence in watching them. They can't be an impulse purchase without forethought and planning - unless you want extra heartache.

The joy, they bring me is immeasurable, and while the heartbreak is horrible, so would a life be without the joy and love they bring.

I guess this sums it up: to love deeply also means to hurt deeply, as you can't have one without the other.
BTW: I still dearly miss my Rosie, and tear up at the thought of her. But I wouldn't have missed having her for the world. She is the one who taught me to love chickens, that they were so much more intelligent, sentient beings than what I thought - just dumb birds. - oh, did she prove me wrong! :love 💔💔:love

Quick thought. If I were a true enabler I would offer this. I cannot ship eggs, but, anyone traveling through eastern Ky is welcome to stop by for a dozen eggs. Every egg I collect is properly stored and rotated for hatching. Even the ones I sell for eating. Why is this, well, as my mom and grandma proved, you never know when I need to set a hen.
Well I may have to come visit you in the spring😊

I will bring you silkie polish eggs and you can give me some maranx eggs 😁

Poor Maggie didn't come out of her nest box at all today. I feel like it can't be long now. But she has not given up quite yet. She still shows interest in life, she chats to me when I visit and will always peck at some corn and chopped shrimp if I offer it by hand. She eats about enough to keep a very small robin alive.
Now it is the weekend if she needs to be euthanised I would have to do it myself which I dread.

In more cheerful news, Bernadette is a hoot. Diana claimed her rightful favorite spot to roost. Bernadette spent a good 40 minutes thinking up and trying different strategies to dislodge her. But Diana stayed put. I was observing from inside the servant's quarters of the Chicken Palace where I was sitting on a stool keeping Maggie company and enticing her to eat shrimp.
While I had my head down chatting to Maggie there was an awful rukus and somehow Bernie got her roosting spot. I have no idea what she did because my eyes were on Maggie. Bernie isn't assertive with Diana in any other regard. It is just that roosting spot she has to have come what may!
