You are more likely to get salmonella from kissing your birds. I really hope no one is making out with their flocks!

BY Bob, can you tell us more about this disease?

Why of course I can. Glad you asked.

Psittacosis is mostly transmitted through dust from dried feces. It can survive for months in dried feces. In the states people primarily get it from cleaning up after caged birds. Mortality in chickens varies greatly, 5 to 40 %. In case anything would happen, treat with Tetracycline (200-800 ppm in feed for 3-4 weeks)

Really, between you, @Shadrach and @rjohns39, I think we have pretty much everything covered Bob! So awesome to know such knowledgeable people!

I will fess up, though, last night on my 3 am “here’s a can of catfood let me go back to sleep you little fur monsters” and bathroom run I gave Hoppy a little kiss good night on her head.

I would like to write I do my best, but I don't. I do try though.

I watched a young Robin learning how to fly here a couple of winters ago. I don't know where it's parents has got to. Eventually it made it into the Holm Oak outside my house.:love
I left a bit of food out for it for the rest of the week.
So sweet. Now all these fledgling stories are making me realize maybe the woodpecker was young. It was fully feathered, but seemed small. I just don’t know what the normal size would be. We have a flock here a certain time of year (I forget when), but not so much right now.
I suspect the answer is ‘yes’, but for those of you who have had chooks go through a hard moult, do they not seem themselves? It’s cold and wet this morning and Charlie seems off her game.
I’m sure when I finish catching up I will see others have already answered this, but that is a definite yes! Mine get standoffish, skittish, don’t wanna be touched, or intimidated by their peers… They eat way less… Did you read my story about how Little Mill nearly starved herself to death her last molt?

This is my alpha hen, Delta, first of her name, Queen of the coop, ruler of the high roosts, dispenser of harsh justice and all round meanie.

she is investigating a new diversion I made for them, I wired a load of pine cones to an upturned wooden hanging basket. I’ve been scattering feed and corn amongst all the pine cones to make them work harder for their treatsView attachment 2143256
Pretty girl, and I love the pinecone idea!

Self Service

looks like the ladies have moved on without me. :(
So cute! I’m so confused, Bob. You give your girls all kinds of treats and seem not to have health problems in your flock. I give very minimal treats and my flock is fat to the point of health problems. I don’t get it, but I’m trying really hard to slim them down before another suffers at my hand of ignorance.

Edited to add, it’s actually pretty ironic that I posted this right after posting about sardines. LOL!

The story is nearly done
Great day today with all 3 babies flying around in the garage and also into the trees outside. I think they have this flying thing nailed though they still like food delivery.
At bed-time Mom summoned them home to the nest.
But only two showed up. Unlike last night there was no baby crying in distress and Mom wasn't distressed either.
So I figure one of them was just ready to leave home. I assume the others will go over the next day or so.
I am sad to see them go, but they were beginning to get messy, so I am also happy to see them head off into the wild.
Such an amazing story! I’m so glad you got to witness it first hand. Thanks so much for sharing it with us.

You have lovely hens and cats and I really like the pine cone idea. I have a feeling the box in my garage where the wrens have nested is full of pine cones! As soon as they all leave home I will investigate.

If someone could write up details of what's happening we could try tagging the folks who run the site for some help. Maybe listing specific post numbers and your browser would help them. I don't like that this is happening to you.
Thanks, Bob. I’m wondering if it has something to do with the fact that I catch up on my phone, through my browser. Maybe if I use the app, instead. The app really just appears to be a browser, however. And also posts all my replies at the bottom of the page I’m on. So I do what Lozzy suggested and go back a page or two or three and forward a page and back… It takes forever.
