We had a cockatiel growing up. His name was Boss. He would walk across the room, climb up the couch, perch his cute, little self on your hand, and then stick his head down into the hole naturally created by your index finger and thumb when your hand is in a relaxed position. One day Boss laid an egg. And then we realized that he was a she. LOL.

Exactly! I was angry this morning because I really thought that there was going to be either an asynchronous day or 2 hour delay but CASD thought that just because it was going to snow after 7 didn't mean that they would've kept kids at home in advance. Most schools in other areas like Fairfield had a Flexible Instruction Day or closed schools completely, like no online classes or FID. Honestly, I was hoping for the kids to be sent home early due to snow and rain but no. Asynchronous day or 2 hour delay. Either one is fine but being sent to school even when winter weather occurs is ridiculous. The school district is ridiculous for not letting kids stay at home in the first place. Imagine a student almost being late to class all because of weather confusion.
This is why I prefer homeschooling. But my parents never allowed it.

Its cold and windy, think I'm keeping the chooks in today going out soon to get extra heat and hubby is fixing up kerosene heater with a new wick after work.

It is 7 out with about 1/4 inch of snow. My weather lied, the S word was not in the forecast. I just went out and opened up the coop. I had locked all 3 momma's and their chicks in it last night and had to have it open early so they would not fight. The good news is now that daylight is breaking I can see Momma hen is at least sheltered from the snow.

Hello everyone ! Friday already. I apologize I haven't posted pictures this week again. I've kept up with the thread, but like every year at Christmas I'm feeling a bit down (except last year when I had COVID ). I dread the holiday and the whole Christmas thing especially in my partner's family, and I feel guilty about it because I have no reason to, apart from being a grumpy, getting old chicken bat !
Anyway I'm wishing (early because I probably won't be posting this weekend) a happy holiday for those of you who celebrate and enjoy it, and if some of you feel like me, remember we're not alone .

And I will especially be thinking of those of you who have health issues still. I guess health is a blessing that is only understood once you don't have it anymore. Reading how you all are so brave dealing with pain makes me realize I should whine a little less and take more joy from being pain free!

I have some "Marylin styles " butts from this morning, thanks to the warm wind we are having. I know some of you are experiencing abnormally cold temps, ours have been abnormally warm for a few days and going up still, just like last year at the end of December. I'm eating outside in short sleeves now! Hoping all chooks in the cold make it all right especially Mama Hen!

Hang in there. Forced family fun will soon be over. Picture #2 is a FANTASTIC Marilyn fluffy butt!

I don't know if I will get any pictures today - the storm is just reaching me now - we are dropping from 60F to 6F in just a few hours (15C to -14C) and the wind is picking up. Lots of storm warnings because of expected 60MPH (96K/hr) winds. I need to secure stuff outside as best I can.
I have decided I will bring the Princesses into the mud room or the garage in the night. It is less about the absolute temperature (though that is pretty cold, but more about the sudden drop and Diana still being only partly clothed).
Both areas stay very cold and indeed I will need to put a heater on in both to prevent pipes from freezing. Having the chickens co-located with the at-risk pipe will be one less thing for me to worry about and they will be asleep anyway so it should be OK.
Hope I keep power.
My one worry about the plan is I have not tried to handle Bernadette and I worry she will freak out on me even in the dark. She is a big bird and if she freaks out it will be hard to contain her.

I want a chicken with furry feet

I do too, but have been told they don’t do well in the extreme heat we have in the summer.

I got my Covid booster shot today. No trouble, but my arm is a little sore.

The last one I had made me very sick. Fever of 104, chills, etc. But I guess it was worth it since when I did get Covid I mainly had congestion and a severe cough. Without the vaccination I probably would have ended up in the hospital.
