Mine like the long runway out the people door too. I suspect so they have room to recover safely if the landing gets flubbed. They hop down from the high roosts, frequently by way of the nest boxes, but prefer to fly out the door. Going up is more hop hop hop getting higher each time.
Oh that is helpful to know. Thank you for sharing.
My worry is if I close the people door will they have the sense to hop down to the roost rather than fly at the doorway and break their little necks. The door has glass panels and birds don't spot glass well. I am thinking if I have to close it I will hang some strips over the glass so they can't see clear through it. That is how I stopped a BlueJay from repeatedly flying into my closed bedroom window a few years ago.

Sometimes Lady Featgerington roost with the big ladies and sometimes with this group?
Every night, except one, Lady Featherington and Glynda have roosted in the Cluckle Hut together. That one night they roosted together in the main coop. Glynda and Lady Featherington are never apart.

If the window has water marks (rain drops that dried), dusty spots, or otherwise is NOT freshly scrubbed squeaky clean, they can see the window. Push comes to shove, take a strip (or 2) of colored tape across the glass. Even finger smudges work. Try closing the door when they're off the roost. They will come peck at it and explore the "new thing".

Emergency brake deployed
This is what it looks like when Babs flies down from the rafters and finds Bernadette parked on the runway.
One of the many reasons I don’t like having the Math Majors roosting in the rafters is that they rely on the people door being open to give them a landing runway, and I like to close the people door when it gets really cold.
They can do a much shorter flight down to the roost which looks like a safer option to me, but they seem to prefer the drama of the long runway flight.
Sorry about the dark grainy video - it is from the coop cam. I think all the dust at the beginning must be from Eli’s landing that the camera missed.

That is some landing.

4 silkies: 1 is frizzle, so separate breed, doesn't count. 1 is satin, same thing, 1 is white, 1 is black, all count for zero. The other girls....ummmm.... @Ponypoor you're going to have to figure out. But just the silkie math alone is room for 6 chicks (if they're the same breeds you already have) just to get back to 12 hens.

I used Mylar tape to deter the Blue Jay and I have some of that left over. I think I will use that. Might look pretty too.
