I have a question and I hope I'm not going to make a complete fool of myself 🙂. @ChicoryBlue is in Central New York, I thought this wasn't too far from where you live (US scale). How come there is such a difference in temps?

I am actually closer to @ChicoryBlue than RC, I believe. It has to do with a couple of things, elevation being a big one, plus (primarily) Jet Stream and (though not so much in this case) proximity to ocean, which has a bit of a moderating effect.
Jet Stream: How far down it dips, and the exact 'curve' of the dip varies.

I am in that paler green block in the middle. I did think the moderating effect of the sea was quite meaningful but maybe I am wrong about that.

I love the pot holders!
And now I am kicking myself about the extension cord because I thought about the plug issue and nearly mentioned it.
You should cut the plug off, run the wire through the conduit and then rewire the plug. It is probably a sealed plug so you will need to buy one you can attach yourself but that is easy enough that even I can do it!
Oh and @bgmathteach source the replacement plug before you cut the old one off and don't make the mistake I once did and found the store out of stock and me without a much needed extension cord for a week!

Thank you for all the explanations. (I admit I was a bit muddled in my US geography and thought the distance was smaller.)
I hope there will be no frostbite or milder ones for all of you in that cold wave!
Cold is also relative to what one is used to- some of my smaller chickens looked cold like Babs when it was 17/-8.

And, as much as I love crème brulée it's a variation from the crème catalane, which is itself derived from.... custard...though there are some other explanations. Is pasta Italian or Chinese ? Pizza Italian or Turkish ? But I'm sure we can claim mayonnaise ( not my cup of tea), chocolate mousse (forever love) and probably Ile flottante (forever love as well).

Well, my chooks survived the night - we got below -6 F and with the wind chill was -35 F. I do think there are a few that have some frosted tips of combs, but won't know for sure for a day....amazingly, given my set up and no heat/electricity out there, I am pretty happy with this.

( and, no @RoyalChick , we couldn't run an extension cord through the conduit...the plug part kept getting stuck at the bend to come up out of the ground :( )

On a brighter note, my neighbor gave me a belated B-day present:

They are pot holders - to pick up hot pots! SO cute - and she made them in my favorite color (Blue):love:love
Those are really cute! and handy (pun intended) :)

That's great! They say you can wait till day 25... Also that you can leave chicks in the incubator as their chirping will encourage the ones still in eggs to hatch! :)
Egg number 7 is hatching. I leave them in the incubator until they dry then move them to the brooder.

Normally it is, but with such strong winds blowing off shore, I'm not so sure at this point/in this situation if it is having a LARGE effect or not. But yes, my in-laws live on the coast in MA (about 2 miles inland), so same latitude...and their winters are MUCH milder than ours. Easily 10 degrees warmer on average. They are one zone warmer than we are (plant hardiness zone ratings.)

Edited: Just checked, their town is registering -3 F right now, we are at -4. So, appears not having a big effect atm.

Maybe leave till #8 hatches - so it can hear chirping and know it's not alone - thoughts anyone else?

We left the chicks in the incubator until they became too rambunctious, but left a few stragglers as we were told the hatching eggs can hear to chirping and will answer back. Like Mama would do for the chickies... ?

Oh I cannot wait to see photos 💕 ❤️
