I really need to get away.

Really
If @BY Bob shows up at my doorstep with a cat carrier 2 girls would fit in it. Maybe not Perdita. A Raven and a Squirrel daughter who have less heavy feathering on their feet may be up for a road trip. 3 is a whole lot easier to teach to roost then 5 unruly hooligans.

I have a dog crate that could hold 4 and a cat carrier for a VERY large cat that would hold at least 3, maybe more.

Just saying....

Though groundhog proclaims six more weeks of winter, that's not the case for Philadelphia

Yes. That is the Certified Humane symbol you should look for.
It is the symbol of the independent group that certifies how the chickens live. One thing I find encouraging is that availability of Certified Humane eggs has increased - it used to be only one grocery store near me, now it is in several. You can also see the label on things like mayonnaise.
Here is the link to the group that certifies them - as you can see it is a pretty low bar relative to the lives all our chickens live and they have plans to raise the bar which would be great.

I don't think UK is doing a great deal for animal welfare... two examples, I hate the way they are still using using animals such as beagle's in their testing labs and our local supermarket has completely taken out free range chickens out of our store :(
