Yay, new chicks to look forward too.
Now that the deed is done and they are paid for I can say the one thing I have commonly heard about Brahma's. Everything I've read or heard about on here is that the hens are prone to be frequent broodies. They should fit right in with your silkie gals.
I read they weren't! sheesh!

These chickens!
Babs flew up to the rafters but failed to land so fell the 11' to ground.
But now it is getting really dark - and probably darker up there without the windows.
So she decides she won't be able to make it up there tonight and is leaving Eli up there alone.
Bernie was already comfortably roosted in her favorite spot and wasn't paying much attention.
So what does Babs try to do? She tries to take Bernie's spot! So Bernie savages her. And Babs just hunkers down.
Next she tries to cuddle up to Bernie who is having none of that!
Now they are both on the roost maybe a foot or so apart from each other and preening in a way that means they don't need to catch each others eye.
I think everyone is unhappy. Babs is clearly nervous about her bunk-mate, Bernie. Eli is all on her own up in the rafters. And Bernie is grumpy at having her routine disturbed.
Even I am not very happy about it because I am sure this is a one-off event and Babs will be right up there tomorrow night. I just hope she doesn't try to go up there in the middle of the night.
As I said, :th
There isn't even a full moon and yet everyone seems bonkers! Even my gang was bonkers tonight...

Well hopefully they all just hunker down and behave!

Almost all my posts show the Chicken Palace but here are a few that give more of an overview. Some are from before it was painted. View attachment 3404074View attachment 3404076View attachment 3404077View attachment 3404083View attachment 3404087View attachment 3404088

I keep meaning to write a ‘my coop’ article but haven’t got around to it.View attachment 3404079
Truly magnificent. You know using those doors made those new ultra high roosts necessary.

A member on here Speckledhen has a thread on here somewhere about her Brahma flock. I read it and it seemed every summer at least 1 of her girls went broody. Hers did not come from a hatchery though so maybe hatchery ones are not as prone? I want Brahma's. Actually big or small if it has feathered feet I am attracted to them. Almost all the feather footed breeds seem to have a tendency to go broody. I do not know why I fight it anymore saying I do not want more broody hens. I'm destined for broody girls just like it seems I'm destined to hatch out boys.

This is why I no longer watch roosting. I let them play their games and then just make sure everyone is safe.

I really hope Babs hasn't hurt herself - she has settled on the roost next to Bernie but is holding her wings out like they do when they are too hot. It isn't bitterly cold, but no way she is hot. UGH
Perhaps you should check her over?
