Brrr another cold one!

Just checked the kiddos back home and everyone looks good, all sleeping nicely.

I made a couple loaves of bread earlier and I am trying to get it baked now so I can go to bed, I have had a migraine all evening. I can’t even sit and watch my lovelies sleeping or hardly check the news here. But forcing myself I need to get that bread baked!

Momma Hen is a game hen. The person who brought her to the horse show that night so many years ago that she escaped from, he fought chickens and he tried ages to catch her. It was his brother that at the time leased out the barn and had the horse shows. After they left, it took us over a year to halfway tame that hen. He was still alive at the time and he had previously offered some money if we were ever able to catch her. I do not believe in cock fighting so until he passed I never put the word out that she was able to be caught. It is her breeding though that I think allowed her to survive on her own for so long. She is a survivor, surviving hawk, dog and raccoon attacks before she was tamed. I have to give credit to the fact that in honesty her being a game hen allowed that. I do not think most normal backyard breeds would have been able to do so. All 4 chicks inherited the feathered legs from Bubba. If Madea ends up looking like her siblings from 2 years ago she will be slightly taller then momma, but with the slender build. Color wise, somewhere between Karen and Goose.

I also want to point out that it stings a bit that the majority of my Marans mix hens get those gorgeous full copper hackle markings. Glares at Holly, Baby and Bunny. You were supposed to have some copper on your necks girls.

Game hen!!! no wonder she’s an independent chicken. I think they are the best bet for any breed going feral from a survival perspective. And thank you for not catching her until she was safe. Cock fighting is abhorrent. I never had a huge interest in Game birds because of their tendency to be used like that, but having seen the spunk, determination, and general willfulness of Mama… I may have to revise my feelings about them. Blame the deed not the breed, and it’s not the chickens fault humans are awful. Just like bully breed dogs

But I am wondering if someone has had the same idea as me with regards to silkies - they are so hard to sex (without doing a genetic test) until they crow or lay an egg....

And then of course there was that 'sort of' discussion way back in the Fall about sexing eggs (which I would love to be able to do).

So I suppose I have to stop eyeing up those darn eagle nests and considering stealing their eggs… I hope they fly off when they reach maturity, because the pair that’s been breeding here is a PITA and very successful about raising their BBB offspring.

Haha, well the Assistant construction manager on this job is 76, and he has said the craziest things! Sexiest racist misogynistic! I burst at laughing once during a meeting when he made a rather off coloured saying about Chinese right in front of our contractors Engineer who is Chinese!!!! He immediately tried to back pedal and stated everyone was great blah blah….

Oh I know he isn’t truly racist but the comments coming from his mouth!

And the sexist and racy comments!!! Good thing I was a Nurse and dealt with dirty old men! I just roll my eyes shake my head and tell him to get real. I don’t think he likes me though, because I tend to glare at him and tell him off in front of everyone…

Truth be told I rather like the old grumpy toad, he is quite the character! And truth be told I could get him into a whole heap of trouble with HR over those comments… which I wouldn’t, he is 76 and has worked in a man’s world all his life, he is not gonna change. His mannerism is a direct relationship to the generation he grew up in, and he is pretty much all bark and no bite- he is all talk. Talks tough…
