I think I need a sketch/diagram to understand. Would they go from one shelf to another? How? I think I am not quite seeing it.
I will draw up something tomorrow and post it - I am trying to get an idea on how to reduce the drama... I just worry about those silly silkies!

I truly got the feeling that Blanche was saying to herself 'finally stupid human - how dense are you? do I have to peck you in the eye?' haha! but it was so blatant, glad I paid attention finally!

Roosting Ideas...

So I have been giving the roosting situation in my Hen House a lot of thought and I am going to try the following:
- Put in 'shelves' that are about 14x14" and stagger them
- Put one at 3.5' and one at 4', the next at 3.5', and the next 4'.... and so on so.
- I can have a lower level for those silkies and birds that can't fly to 3.5', staggered the same way.

This way there will be a single shelf for each bird to roost on, and if they squabble then then can just move to the next one.

Thoughts everyone?
Can you draw it? I can't picture it.

This deserved a laugh, a sad/hug, and a heart and an OMG!

Poor Eli and Babs, fast friends separated for the night! :hugs

 I am always amazed how much they can stuff in their craw!

I know I shouldn't, but I chuckle at the image I have of food-boob Babs trying to get enough lift to get to the rafters.😆

And so sweet, them calling and talking to each other🥰

🤔Maybe you should do this more often with them...and it might convince Eli to stay with Babs if it happens regularly (like 3-4 days in a row), instead of just the occasional thing.🤔
I think this might be the secret weapon. I was amazed how late they were willing to stay outside digging and I think it was because I was sitting there.
I will definitely try this again tomorrow.
There were a lot of worms because it got reasonably warm and the snow is melting making it all nice and damp.
Bernie somehow found the path of the pipe I laid that takes water from the sump pump outlet out to grade inside the chicken garden. She dug all the way down to the underground pipe! I think I will need to do a bit of fill-in digging of my own!

Just keep in mind roosting height frequently goes hand in hand with pecking order. Higher status birds get higher roosts (or at least reserve the right to go to bed later and eject any from their desired place/path to said place)

Ya crazy birds!

Try to put in some three quarter inch crusher run, they won’t be able to dig that up easily.

I was thinking all low roosts because of the fall.
Yes I was also thinking that - and last year was going to do that… and with those brahmas coming, I do worry about a big bird and heights…

You should! It’s on YouTube I’m sure. Watch the whole video
I will look it up after I drink my tea!

Oh heavens no, keep em coming! ❤

Exactly so! Wonderful example, thank you 😊

Oh absolutely, it is his thread to sew 🪡 , I just saw the concern of not being able to keep up with the thread brought up a few times and hope to help a little is all. We will see what he thinks of Ponypoor’s example and go from there or drop it as he sees fit.
And maybe a link to any key posts? Like Aurora’s Wednesday post? Those are so beautifully written.

I do need more questions for Aurora. Maybe on some "creative" topics. There are lots of chickens out there with problems. I just know it.
