My hen took her chicks out yesterday for the first time. They loved it. They were learning how to scratch, and look for food on the ground, how to hunt for insects, and how to dust bathe. They even learned to hide when the mom saw a hawk!
That's great to hear that they hid from a hawk! Scary though. 😱

Tragedy

in the joy of new life and their first time out in the big world, tragedy struck the chicks today.

Dusty fell in the pool today and before I could get to her she was gone. It was so fast. I had just named them today.

I'm so sorry Dusty. Rest in Peace poor baby.

I'm so sorry Bob. These things happen, please don't be hard on yourself.

I am so sorry about Dusty. These things do happen, and more often then not to our favorites. I lost my sweet cheepy last week to another raccoon. After 3 weeks of care inside to heal his horrific peck wound he'd finally healed up and i'd been able to have his mom nugget take him back. I do take a small bit of comfort knowing that the following evening when the darn thing came back for round 3 i was waiting and he met his maker but it still hurts.
