That's not fairVery!
The guidance I was given is that if a three year old human can open it then so can a raccoon.
Cool! How nice, and exactly what you need,I have been pondering the bald patch issue. I looked in the yarn bag to see if anything would go with Babs’ coloring. I thought I could use Velcro as the quick release mechanism.
Then I got to thinking about your advice and instead of making the bonnet I got one of these.
And then because it is Tuesday I also got these.
Yup I did it. I went on a road trip and came back with five chicks. They hatched while I was overseas last week and have been waiting for me. They are 8 days old.
We only just got home and already I am smitten.
MMMMM chicky nuggets. They are so cute.I have been pondering the bald patch issue. I looked in the yarn bag to see if anything would go with Babs’ coloring. I thought I could use Velcro as the quick release mechanism.

Child proof outlets are even worse. One time I left the plug partially hanging out of one because it wouldn't go in all the way. Imagine if someone touched the prongs (I have). Even my Mom has a hard time plugging anything into those. They're adult proof as well. That's not fair- my nephew can open the child-proof medicine cap that I can't!!!

This is interesting, can you elaborate? I know that some people on BYC use aged ramial wood chips in their uncovered runs, which would include leaves from the tree-trimmers to begin with. They don't muck it out but let it build and become soil-like as it breaks down. It's also suggested when folks ask about fixing a muddy run. It helps to keep everyone off the wet below. This does not include hay or straw though, which I heard can easily get moldy.

Tax will have to come tonight! I had a no-show appt., so popped in.
I will say, all that rain, I ended up taking 2 wheelbarrows full of wet bedding out of the run last night, and another before work this morning. Put in a wheelbarrow full of new wood chips and a whole bale of shavings....and it seems like it barely made a dent in what needs to be done!
The older wood chips that have been in there since early fall are starting to degrade - that plus the chooks mixing it up with the leaves and bedding that were put on top, and it was a sopping mess. I have my work cut out for me for the next few nights. Thank goodness I do have some covered parts! I put a bunch of bedding down in the far end of the run, too, where it drains better, as I know I won't get to mucking that out this week. And we are supposed to get more rain every day but Tuesday of this week!
So sorry about Ginger! What a nice tribute to her you've made here.Farewell
My Ginger left us and went to chicken heaven, in the morning of April 24th, 2023. She was 25 months old. She stayed with us for her first 17 months and was the unquestionable alpha hen.
I am very fortunate that this is the first time I lost one in my 25+ months of chicken keeping, if she even counts as we rehomed her 8 months ago. (knock on wood)
We picked up Ginger and 7 other babies on March 12th, 2021 at our local feed store. I am pretty sure they got their chicks from some big hatchery.

Ginger was a freedom lover. She got out of the fence all the time.

She is the best with treats and a great forager.

She's named Ginger because we were not creative with names and she was the darkest among all golden buffs.
She was not overly sweet. But when she wants to be on your lap, she really let you know and demanded to be picked up.

In August 2022, Inky was bullied very bad by Ginger (perhaps because Inky molted after going broody) so we sent Ginger to my friend.
Goodbye, Ginger, we will always remember you. We will keep talking about you as the escape artist. I am glad that you are pain free now.
Answers tomorrow when I can see straight. Whatever nasty thing I got hasn’t quite finished with me yet, and today’s road trip took every ounce of strength.Cool! How nice, and exactly what you need,![]()
I saw some of the posts..... Does the even/odd number not matter then past 6?....The eyeliner means an easter egger or legbar? Tell us what kind of chickens they are please!
Can you also tell us where you got them from? Are they vaccinated or not, and how you thought through that issue? This is what I've wrestled with too, but held off on more chickens this year for some practical reasons unrelated to that....Also, how are you feeling, now, you must be feeling better from that wicked sickness? Having chicks will help for sure! Sorry for so many questions....
