Oh the little time wasters! I have to give myself a stern "You spend THIS much time with the chickens each morning. Otherwise, you are going to have your breakfast burned, cold, or soggy." I have to count 12 grown hens in GP, then 9 pullets, 1 cockerel, 1 rooster. (In GP) In the "outside chickens" (The ones that are recovering from injury or molting, or in Sam's case, can't be with another chicken. It's mating season, which means that Nekbother will tear Sam apart with his spurs. And the same from Sam to Nekbother.) There are 3 grown hens, plus Sam, plus 9 cockerels. (One is in GP, because he would grab the other cockerels and drag them around. Moody teens.)OMG these Hens are going to be the death of me - I was doing chores and it's just miserable raining. So I figured everyone was inside and I shut the front barn door. While I was out dumping the manure pile I heard this frantic BAWK BAWK BAWK - Mr P and I ran for it - it was coming from outside the front door!
I ran and opened the door to Whiskers freaking out, she ran inside while I cursed her 10 ways up and down. Then I did a thorough head count to make sure everyone was inside.
Thank goodness I only have to count to 13! I spend just as much time running around counting and chasing after chickens as I do mucking out stalls!
Right now it's pelting down, so they are all inside - with all the doors closed! In a few minutes I will start on the painting of the office/feed room, I need to get my shelves, tools, feed bins and what-not all back in here organized (such as it is).

In my first batch of chicks, I had 50/50 for pullets and cockerels. Or, I would have but for my stupid, but sad, mistake. Now this was my first time cleaning out the chicks' stall in the barn, right? I put them in a tote, put some glass over the tote, because I don't want the outside chickens getting to them... So here I am, merrily cleaning their brooder out. Then I go check on the chicks. Copper is laying on her side, looking like she is dead. Well, she is!

I will not make that mistake again.
