Twofer Tuesday - an unusual pairing of Tassels and Bernie. They are checking out the hole that Babs dug. Moments before Babs pulled out some big wriggly thing and consumed it. These two are hoping to find another one!

My dad dropped off a bunch of pumpkins, gourds, and corn stalks a bit ago. I'm going to process the obviously frost damaged ones during the week, but hopefully the rest will keep and I can do them over the winter. There are a few pie pumpkins!

Gourds. I love gourds so I'll harvest seeds from them to plant along the treeline next year. Gourds!!!

As for the corn stalks, what should I do to get those ready for the chickens? Take the cobs off? Chop it? Or just haul one stalk in there every so often and let the ladies go to town? Dad says he wants a few for the deer and all he'll do is put them in the woods. Do I have to crack the kernels?

My two spotty dotty chickens for tax
Not all chickens find out how to eat it from the cob, so I usually at least crack it off the kernel. And it's better digested if you actually crack it in smaller pieces so that's what we usually do, with a rock the size of a fist on a flat rock. The hard thing is stopping the chickens from getting their beaks under there while we smash it.
If you give it to them whole it helps to tie it or block it somehow so it doesn't keep moving while they peck.

Twofer Tuesday. It looks like I copied Kelly but I actually had the first two pics before she posted- great minds/chickens think alike 😁.
