Wow! They really do casually hop up the 6’! Is that fencing there ostensibly to keep the chickens in? Maybe next year get a couple of chunkier birds- some marans for dark eggs? I hear they can’t take off 🤔
Yes I figured 6’ would be perfect, seems it’s perfect as a launch point for the trees !!!

It’s the Polish in them, makes them light enough and have a greater wing span, enabling them to really fly well. Their mothers can’t fly more than 4’ and lately I haven’t seen anyone except Buttercup flying up onto the Hen House door at night to roost. I am thinking Buttercup is their egg mama.

Is that buttercup? I loove her feathering! I’d like to get a chicken next spring that looks either just like her (not that I’m looking for flyers) or has Queen Aurora’s likeness (bearded 🤩).

Yes. More pictures!

Havoc and Enigma (seems like EVERY pic I tried to take this morning had some sort of blur)

Pippa, finally filling in her back

PITA (bottom), Blanche (middle), and Primula (top): unusual that any of these 3 are together.

Cardhu and Cumulo

Storm and Nimbus (notice how close Nimbus is getting to mama's size)

Maizie (see the blur)

I'm sorry, I have Marans and Marans crosses. 6 feet is no problem for them. If they need to, 9 to 10 feet straight up they can do. If they want to go higher, they just find something to use as a ladder until they get as high as they want. Squirrel one of my bigger crosses, sleeps about 25ft off the ground in a tree beside momma hen.

This roost, is about 12 foot high, no problems. Even my silkie rooster is able to get up there by himself. Not in one leap, but he uses the stall boards like a ladder and does in in 3 hops.

Can’t hold them down :lau

Moulting, some start with small feathers, other large one - and then there are the ‘let’s just go naked’ ones that drop them all!!
I can't give her oils right now because of the poops :(

She had a little cat food this morning and ate on her own. I made her eat layers mash and yogurt this afternoon and she snatched some turkey leg meat off me before bed.
It stopped raining for an hour so she spent time on the grass while I cleaned out wet cardboard and sand from the run.

Let's see how she is tomorrow
