Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Hepzibah molted for weeks. it looked like a BR snow storm in the run but she never looked defeathered or half naked like Namaste. Namaste went up & down. I'd think she was doing well & her feathers started growing back, then she'd have a bad day ~ & recover . Then another lot of feathers would come out & she'd look worse than ever.

The poor girl. That is clearly no fun.

Hey everyone, I had the idea that we should find our funniest photos of our chooks and share them. I’d like to offer up one of my favourite pictures of Chickie, who decided that as she is a bird, she should be in a tree. She got in there by herself, turned around and hopped out again. I tried getting a video but only got a few seconds. It’s also a fluffy butt photo!

Aw, thank you. I know they are not the most exciting or exotic breeds but the garden’s primary objective is eggs, eggs, eggs and no brooding so this is what I’ve got. One day maybe I’ll have my own and try those Easter Eggers, Australorps, and Ameraucanas!

Ok, I’ve fixed up the perch. I cut it to a width of four inches and rounded off the corners. I’ve got it above the door so it’s higher than the nesting box, and should have enough headroom. I’ll put Charlie on it after dark, so hopefully she will stay there.

Nope. Put her on, shut the roof, then I hear this ‘thud’ as she jumps down. I tried again and she panicked, so I left her. I’ve got a friend who makes her roosts out of branches as they’re round and more claw-friendly.

A clean bum!

So... if egg-song is what the hen sings when she has laid her egg and is calling for the rooster, is there a name for when they chat to themselves whilst sitting on the nest?
