I think there is a lot of confusion with RIRs and ISA Browns and a lot of ISA Browns wind up being called RIRs. True heritage RIRs are supposedly not over bred as egg producers. I think the thing to keep in mind is that any hen that is laying 250 or more eggs a year is likely to wind up with reproductive issues.
Well, Queen Bee is actually an offspring of Rosie, who I lost shortly after the eagle attack. Rosie was truly my friend and the only hen I ever had who would jump up on my shoulder and watch me work in the chicken run, back when i was still putting up fences, etc. Shirley, another favorite actually raised Queen Bee and Queen Victoria. BTW, QV is doing great. She still acts as young as ever. Neither of them lay any eggs to speak of anymore, but that's not criteria for living here. :love

BTW, Rosie was one of my original hens. I get them from Wilco, not TSC. Not production birds necessarily, but from a big farm. Wilco is particular about where they get their chicks, but it is a farm that produces a lot of chicks after all. Both Rosie and Little Red Haired Girl were killed by birds of prey, so I don't know how long they would have lived. I'm so thankful to have Rosie's girls. :)

Let's not worry about her life expectancy when we can't predict the future. You never know.
She is still staying in the coop recovering from the Louie Louie wounds that were reopened when either Pippi or Mad mated with her. But, she is doing a very good job of helping Gertie and Girlie Girl with their eggs. Both are broody and QB jumps up and sits on their eggs when they get up to eat and drink. Pretty sweet girl. :love

On the other hand, my Lucy (one of my original ISA Browns) is four and a half, feisty and fighting fit, despite having lost her voice about two and a half years ago!
There you go. You never know. I would not stay up at night worried about it.

That's awesome! I'm very glad to hear QV is still going strong. They have a lot to offer even when not laying any longer. 🥰

Lilly did that once for Sydney. It was the sweetest thing. 🥰

You are not fighting fair. So cuuuuuute! 🥰😍

I am so weak.
Once again I am way behind. I'll be the voice of (semi) reason. If you haven't already decided, I'd say if you really must have one, then wait till next spring. Everything will be working for you . ie weather , the ability to integrate with more space, etc
