Foxes are pretty good at opening things too. Raccoons have amazing dexterity and are well know to open these kinds of latches.I was wondering about raccoons too. I understand that foxes are pretty good at opening latches too. At least they are here in Australia.
I believe this is likely what is happening. I've seen this with my flock.Perhaps they are in mourning too?
Any change to the flock will affect the flock dynamics and therefore flock behaviour. Hopefully with time they will get used to this new normal.

Just to speak up for the Legbars. They aren't flighty. They are very friendly and energetic and curious and interested in everything and able to fly everywhere!@Ribh I say this as I am targeting frosted legbars to add to my flock next. My own small flighty breed.Pot, say hello to Kettle!
