Supplemental heat

Well if you think they will not be happy moved something with place more sheltered then I would keep them where they are.

The oil filled radiant heater is relatively safe, I use one in the feedroom, it can put out a lot of heat. I wouldn’t hang it up though, if it fell and the radiators were punctured that would be serious.

Not sure if the umbrellas would freak the chooks out, likely trying to put a tarp over top would be also looked at with suspicion.

Would it be possible to put a tarp up like a ‘tent’ - ‘A’ frame type tent with the heater in the middle under the roost?

Of course with the birds if they are not used to this they might roost elsewhere so then all your effort would be for naught.

Any chance of getting a couple of those sweeter heaters? And hanging them over the roost? Your coop is so spacious and airy it’s hard to think of what would be practical and not cost a fortune. Is there any way next summer that you can annex off a section for winter roosting that would be easier to keep around 5c at night? I have found that to be the optimal temp for my gangs

We are also getting the arctic plunge as of Saturday night, I might get another one of those radiant heaters and put in the hen house, keep it on the lowest setting to 1) keep eggs from freezing, 2) keep the hen house a bit warm so they can go warm up. I think 5C is the lowest setting. That would keep the hen house a bit above freezing and protect the eggs.

Any extreme temp, hot or cold, is tough on people and livestock.

I would say that if you can keep drafts out, and provide a warm up space your kiddos should be fine. Just monitor them to ensure they are not showing cold stress. If they aren’t moving about digging and scratching and eating during the day as usual then they may be cold stressed.

At that point then you can make a decision about moving them into a warmer more sheltered area.

Do you know how long they are predicting the cold? A few days should be ok. Here they are predicting into February, a few weeks is a long time to be constantly cold. A few days though and they should do ok.

Might have to move all my 48 chooks into the house 😳

Good thoughts on the radiant oil filled heater. Hanging a sweeter heater or some more panels would be good for @RoyalChick's situation.

You're picking up your sweeter heaters locally?

I bought them from a distributor here in Ontario, less expensive than on Amazon also. They have free shipping here, which is good as it’s about a 3 hr drive for me to go pick it up.

I think they ship to the US also.

Tedi & Diane going for pellets & crumbs. Beaks are fine so far pecking on that cinder block, they go for that first before anything on smooth wood. Probably easier to take it up because there's more resistance on a rough surface?
