OMG, Major research is being done tonight. George has either mites or lice. Either way he has creepy crawlies all over his head poof and in his neck feathers. I ended up having creepy crawlies on me from snuggling him when I got home to put him up. I do not do creepy crawlies in no shape form or fashion. I figure I need something to treat them all now, and the coops. I want pesticides, I'm not going with natural remedies. Death to the creepy crawlies.

First time with a bug issue in 6 years of having chickens so I am fortunate. I always heard crested breeds were prone to getting them and George is my first true crested chicken.
I'm just now having to deal with Scaley Leg Mites and purchased this (below). It did not come with the dropper, I used an eye dropper, 3 drops per bird for standard hens, between the shoulder blades:

Unfortunately, @featherhead007 is right about the cleaning out the coop and spraying it down with peremetian.

I had to order the ivermectin off Amazon, the local stores were out of it, but I was able to get the peremetian mixed bug spray in the horse section and it's made for all animals, just had to read up on chicken coop levels for mixing.

I totally get it! Even though SLM are chicken-specific, I've been itchy all week 😵‍💫🫨

Remember a couple yrs ago I had lice here? I treated with horse bug spray - worked like a charm. I sprayed all the Hen House and nestboxes with it and replaced the shavings which I also sprayed down and mixed the spray onto the shavings.

Spray the vent, belly under the wings and neck/crest.

Yup that long feathers can hide stuff easily. But I don’t think they are more prone to getting it than others - I bet that the two new boys brought it home to you. That’s how mine were infected - those two Azur pullets.

One of the creepy crawly evil critters I found on myself after handling Mr P

Personally. I would really like to read you log on how you have dealt with your animals health.
A lot could be learned for all of us through your experiences
Now that I have stated this, everyone is behaving! May have to dig around for photos and such.

None of my polish ever had issues with lice, etc. (Knock on wood) In my experience the head poofs have not led to any additional issues other than issues seeing.

Be very careful with ivermectin the dose is very specific to poultry:

As per the link from the article referenced below

“Ivermectin Pour On, which is applied topically on the skin, has a universal recommended dosage of 200 micrograms/kilo. There are 1000 micrograms in 1 milligram and 5000 micrograms in 1 millilitre of liquid. 5000 mcgm divided by 200 mcgm = .04ml. Therefore the dosage would be .04 ml/kilo. One drop from a standard eyedropper = .05. So if your bird weighs 2 kilos the dosage would be just less than 2 drops! Believe me, it’s not always easy to be accurate and not use too much.”

Here is an article to read:

https://bitchinchickens.com/2019/04/29/ivermectin-for-parasite-control/

FYI a kilo (kg) is 2.2lb. So a 2kg bird is 4.4lb. Dosage is less than 2 drops for Ivermectin 5mg/ml. (1 drop if using 10mg/kg).

One also needs to be alert to the strength of the ivermectin: 5mg/ml or 10mg/ml (also seen as 10% just to confuse us all).

I have used the 10mg/ml liquid oral drug I get for my horses. And let me tell you trying to get 0.2ml/kg into the silkies was hard to dose.

Also oral ivermectin is useless as a pour-on/drop-on. It is not absorbed through the skin like the pour-on stuff. So be vigilant to this. I used the oral stuff.

There is nothing specific to egg withdrawl in the US or CND or Europe but I did read in Australia it’s a 2 week with-drawl. I ate my eggs as I figured the 0.2ml dose was so minuscule ot would be practically undetected- and if so I likley needed worming myself dealing with the horses for 40 yrs 😆

Horse bug spray works great - and it’s convenient. Comes in a spray bottle ready to use.

Which reminds me I need to dig out my stuff I already found ticks on Truly and Reenie - so starts the daily spraying of the geegees before turn out each morning to control ticks. Ugh!
