Which is why it is so important you understand how you want your flock. I broke my rule early on & paid for it. I've tried really hard not to do it again, so even though I have lost birds & now have a number of *onelies* they have become singletons after they have an established place in the flock & formed other friendships as well. This time I stuck hard to my rule even though it meant buying more birds than I really wanted. So though I lost 1 Vorwerk the remaining one is ok in the hierarchy.
This is why. Everyone should start with a friend of their own kind. Of course those are my words and not my deeds. 🤯

It's hard when you also have to accommodate a non chickeneer. I'm afraid I got passive~aggressive on the man & have just never got around to replacing the Vorwerk like he wanted. He doesn't get it won't be the same dynamics & means more quarantine, more squabbling, another shift in the pecking order & a lone bird would be picked on so it means @ least 2 & my next 2 are already spoken for because I want the Aracaunas, which would bring me up to 20 chickens, which is pretty much @ my upper limit. It is a lot to try & explain to someone who grew up on a farm where a ton of birds were just shoved in together & had to manage as best they could. I want more for my birds than that.

It is tough. I find it especially hard to tell her no when she really wants something. I have no idea how I will another Polish without having them be 1/2 my flock. I've created a real mess for myself.

It will work out, Bob. Sometimes it just requires time. Quite a lot of time. I thought my Campines would never fit in with my other birds but now Ha'penny is in tight with the BRs, who couldn't stand her to start with.

I was hoping that 3 brooded together would be friends even if they are of 2 different breeds and that hopefully the Legbar when grown up would either stick with her 2 brooder-buddies or join her fellow road runners.

This really is going to depend on the personalities of the birds you acquire & there are absolutely no guarantees in that department! Ask @BY Bob. 😆

Big Girl was quite perplexed by the whole process, and refused to selfie even...

Tight security Measures here on the Farm...

With Roostie being fairly Lame I have been keeping him and his girls penned in with some temporary snow fencing and step in posts. Well as the weather has been getting worse, and as he seemed quite miserable fenced In I have been expanding his pen, by using the corners of the permanent fence, random obstacles, and piles of house parts. For the past three weeks or so this has been my impenetrable barrier keeping him safe from the other Jerks, I mean, Roosters... (mostly Sammy who has a grudge, and Dean, who has an attitude problem)

Interestingly enough it has been quite effective until today. Sammy heard Roostie calling his girls for treats, saw me over there and got jealous. I was herding the ladies towards Roostie and into the tractor for the night, when Sammy jumped the fence and put the run on poor Roostie. I scolded him, and no harm came of it, because Roostie knows he’s in no shape to try to take Sammy up on it. I suppose this means I will likely have to move Roostie and the fence tomorrow morning...
