Lovely, and I can't help but think of all those fertile eggs! I bought a brand new incubator. I had the heat set perfect. Ran perfect. Babies were coming alive. Shipped eggs at that. I had candled them around 9:30. Thought I would check the temp around 11:30. Hot! The eggs weren't just a bit too warm, they were hot! Then I smelled it. The motor! That motor malfunctioned big time. I hurried and unplugged it. What if I hadn't checked it before bed? Fire? I'm seriously thinking it could have happened. Of course, all of my babies died. To say I was depressed is an understatement. I actually cried a bit. I got hold of the guy I had gotten some if the eggs from because they were mostly fertile, ordered more. Taking that incubator back to the Cal Ranch store when I can. Hope they'll give me a new one, without a receipt. I know the gal pretty good now that helped me. She's in there most of the time when I go in for feed and other things. .

I threw the incubator here out shortly after taking over the animal care here.
I got told that none of the hens would sit. Ten years later it's hard to get any of them to stand!

Can’t sleep anymore tonight. I can’t wait fir the shipment of chicks to show in town today. I will be increasing my family with new chicks. Gezz, seems like I’m an expectant father, waiting for his babies to be born.
Yes I have everything ready for them . Brooder box, heat source, water, chick feed. And a lifetime of love waiting for them in my country paradise!

And of course you will share pictures of the new babies.

I can get a 16oz jar of the vetasan for $80, I can’t post the pic of what showed up for the spray when I searched VetWell, but suffice it to say that it doesn’t seem available here. I found a 2% ointment for a more reasonable $15 and I can’t tell if photos are attaching or not... why did they do another update?

I am naming her Lucky. Poor Baby... she ate a little bit and drank, but didn’t gorge herself which seems good. The dingleberry from hell is how I would describe her back end. I clipped one growing in feather that bled a bit in cutting it off. She didn’t really seem to mind. She was also unable to preen her back end at all, and the lice were completely Out of control. I rarely bother with gloves, as I’m usually half covered in poop, and have just accepted this as my natural state; I broke out the nitrile gloves for this one. She’s too weak to really evade me yet which helped a lot. I powdered her with some of my precious remaining Carbaryl powder I found hidden in my cargo trailer. Her tail is a little cockeyed now.View attachment 2515248

Our current theory is that she was trying to stand on the edge and drink and managed to flip it over on herself. US Size 10 men’s boot also for size reference. I still feel incredibly stupid. I’ve been walking past her for days. Arduinna was jumping on it. She is going to get a lot of treats, I’m sure. She’s sleeping in the chicken trailer, confined to a tall dog crate for now. I didn’t want her getting pushed around too much at Roosting.
Edit to add: or spread any surviving lice. I was ok with the thought of her having been taken by a predator, but the level of guilt I’m feeling right now... I don’t have the words to express it. That this happened under my nose.

I have to say, she doesn’t look too bad. A little scruffy but considering the time she was under there, she could be a lot worse.
Don’t beat yourself up. How could you know? Obviously she wasn’t carrying on under there, she was too quiet!
You will have her in top shape in no time! Lots of good food and treats, I’m sure.

What a sad and lovely story. Thank you for sharing. I thought I had read all your stories on that thread but now I am not so sure so will try and make a point of doing so.
