Is it wrong that I feel before you can trim a chickens beak you should have your dominate index finger removed?

Such cruelty. Humans can really suck sometimes.
Part of the problem is the shape of the beak. Even with the utmost care and removing the smallest amount the possibility of creating fractures in the beak is too high to warrant the use of any sort of clippers. It's a bit like trying to clip a toenail that has rolled in at the edges; the nail invariably splits.

OMG - is that from beak trimming? I am so naive, I had no idea. That is awful! I know that declawing cats is really mutilation but I had no idea what beak trimming really was. Oh so, so bad.

When we lived in Iceland, the Liaison explained to us that there were no safeguards built into popular tourist sites. For example, you can walk right out onto the rock shelf of Gulfoss. There is no rope or chain, not even a warning sign. From there you could slip off several hundred feet over the waterfall into the rocky river below. (That didn't stop my husband and many others from walking out there.) :barnie The Liaison said, the Icelander's response to people who go where they shouldn't, just because someone hasn't posted a sign or put up a rope is, "stupid tourist". That was a running joke for us while we were there.

If you look close you can see the people out on that rock. A quick google search will show a photo of someone who fell off!
That is a stunning view ... God IS Good!!

All of Iceland is like that. Very beautiful and very different. It is actually an island created by volcanoes, so there is a lot of lava rock, hot springs, and water. Lots of water. I don't know how many waterfalls, and they are all beautiful. I highly recommend a visit to Iceland!!!

My sister went last year.. that’s probably as close as I’ll ever get

Just to clarify for you and @ValerieJ we all have some fairly strong opinions ( very negative) on beak “trimming” here, and this is why. It’s a horrific practice, and those of us with girls who have beaks like this are usually caring for rescues of some sort. None of us support, agree with, or participate in this barbaric disfigurement for human convenience.

I have 8 girls I’m working with and have been helping them reshape their lower mandible (very gently and slowly with a fine file) to a more normal beak shape. Beaks do grow a bit... like nails. And given access to rocks and hard surfaces the girls will rub them down on their own as well. I always try to make sure my rescue girls have at least one good rock in their run area for this. I’ll see if I can get some current shots now that I’ve had them for a year, to show their improvement on the lowers, most of them are wholly self improved. Their Rooster is a bit of a over protective nut case though, making photos challenging.
