There you have the problem with nest boxes with hard floors. I've watched hens here lay eggs on soil and the squat hieght becomes a lot less important.
This is a timely reminder for me Shad. I've been planning to build nest boxes soon. I must make them deep enough for a soil base.

HI everyone, hope everybody had a great weekend. I'm a bit behind and have to catch up. It took a few days but think I've finally figured out the right dose of insulin. Almost half of what I was on before the pump so spent the weekend dealing with a few lows. It's tricky to find the correct dose as activity, hormones and stress can also affect sugar levels. So what is working right now, may change in a week. Anyway, I took some new pictures of the chicks today. They are 4 1/2 weeks now and would like to know your opinions on them, 5 out of the 6 are for sure boys, but there is one that is questionable, but leaning towards a boy as well. If my suspicion is correct and this batch is all boys, so far this year out of 10 chicks hatched, 8 of them have been male. Someone shoot me now. Momma hen is going strong on her 7 eggs just about 10 days I think in. And tonight I'm loading up the incubator again, not sure the exact number I'll set but I have right at 2 dozen marans eggs and may toss in some of the other girls eggs as well. Will post the pics in the next post.

So what do you all think. If i have 1 girl it is #3. But I'm starting to see a hint of pink on the comb and just the hint of wattles. Not a good sign this young, I have a feeling its a sneaky boy.

I am of no use to you at all. All I can positively say is they are chickens and they are cute. I can also say I love the look on #5's face!

I know the quality isn't the best, but, the boys have stolen one of the cat toys. I've yet to catch it on camera but they've already attempted to flog it a few times. Every time I bring out the camera to film it though they just end up staring at the camera.
