That's a big project. If you are away is there someone who will feed and water your flock?
Yes, my neighbours and I have a quid pro quo arrangement :) we're used to providing care for each others'flocks and cats.

Also, the feed dispensers I have hold about a week's food, so the hens are ok without support for short trips.

Egg Laying Nonsense

There are days I look at this thread and think what am I going to post on today? Yesterday was not one of those.

At long last I had Elphie's story ready to go, it was going to snow significantly, and in the middle of everything Hattie's voice changed.

So I held this story for today.

Aurora Laid an Egg

That's right, only Maleficent is holding out on me now. Of course this did not happen without some shenanigans.

First I need to apologize to Lilly, she did not strip Hattie's favorite nesting box. Aurora did. I refilled the nesting boxes with fresh straw yesterday morning. Aurora did not care for that.

Then when it was time for Aurora to lay, Hattie was also trying to lay in the box that Aurora wanted to use. Would they share? Watch and see.

Here are the eggs when all was said and done.

And I ask you all, is this a pink egg? Perhaps both my EEs actually aren't laying brown eggs after all. It looks kind of pink in that nest.

Great job Aurora!

It looks very pink in the nest.

So I guess Hattie showed her appreciation of Aurora's nest building by appropriating it? "Get out Aurora, I've got business to conduct and your services are no longer required!"

Bob, Apart from my Campines, the other 7 birds are supposed to be brown layers. :hmm I get various shades, none of which I'd actually call brown; everything from *yellow* [australorps] to pinkish [Barred Rocks]. The Favorelles lay a medium dark brown. Lavender lays a very light tan/beige, Lottie a small cream one, when she lays properly.

Wow I finally caught up after falling what seemed to be 20 pages behind, and with the holidays to make reading time harder to find, I feel bad for only occasionally “liking” posts and am wondering if there’s an etiquette to the practice. forgive me as a newbie but I’m liking everyone’s post in my head and failing to mark it on the actual post.

The flock of 17 I’m managing is now 20 weeks old and someone laid their first egg yesterday. Not everyone has a red comb, so the suspects are a distinct subset of RIR or Red Star. And our young rooster is now crowing—I have a home lined up for him at my sister’s place as I’m reluctantly admitting that for this flock, there is no advantage to keeping a rooster. It’s sad because he’s quite beautiful right now and still quite leery of people, but I don’t want to wait until he turns aggressive on any of our volunteer tenders (or me.) Bob, at what age did Jabber become unmanageable?

here is our guy, August. He’s a Silver Spangled Hamburg.

Happy New Year and Happy Anniversary Bob!
He would be very hard to part with! He's so handsome!!!

They are so beautiful. I love the names. My Hattie is named such after the Mad Hatter. How's that for coincidence!

:frow i couldnt do the 700+ messages i was behind  sure am glad to be back though!
 700+!!! That's a lot! I'm not sure what the etiquette is, but I know I don't go through my posts asking who liked it or not. That's what is so great about BYC. Just a lot of good people sharing good stuff. :wee
