She had her reasons (I was too slow setting down the pot with blueberries in it). But I feel a bit of patience would have been nice. Diana is not a patient lady!

"Almost entirely unprovoked"? What did you do RC? 😄

You did, but for some reason it didn't hide the photo.
There is hidden text instead of the photo. It took me a moment to find it. If you look above the picture it looks like smudged grey lines. Touch it & it will reveal the spoiler! :)

It's Chickmas Eve again. So I thought I might share my prior experience with chickens.

We got 25 eggs from a relatives flock to hatch and return. Out of 25 only 6 hatched. They were all Barred Plymouth Rock mixes. We had one rooster and five hens who we kept for around a month.

Moontip was the oldest and the rooster. He was very docile and had puffy cheek muffs and was my favorite. I taught him how to walk briefly on a cylindrical object and he loved mealworms.

Next born was Shadowball who I taught to jump from high heights.

Nightstar was named after a peculiar yellow dot on her head as a chick. She had the yellowest legs out of all of them, making me think that she was the closest to being pure. Nightstar didn't like mealworms for some reason, choice of taste I suppose.

Spinner, the fourth, was born with her navel stuck to the egg shell. As she struggled to get free she would spin around on the floor, hence her name. Despite the issue at birth she survived to four weeks to my knowledge.

Cloud was next. Not much to say about her except she was a slightly lighter shade of black than the others.

Shade was the last to hatch and thus was pretty small.View attachment 2579621View attachment 2579623View attachment 2579625
Love the names you choose Blazinga. It reminds me of the names in the "Elf quest" graphic novels.

My reaction to having a chicken hanging off my finger was to drop the pot (it really did hurt quite a lot!).
But she didn’t notice and she hung on.
So most of the blueberries were gone by the time she got back to the ground.
Karma I guess!
Serves her right! Let's hope she learned something too. Never bite the hand that feeds you!

Okay, so made it to page 200, still a long way to go, but I am determined to get caught up. I thought I'd take a break and introduce myself to everyone here and tell you about my chicken story.

My name is Cindi and I'm new to BYC. I stumbled upon the Fluffy Butt Acres thread last night and kept myself up most of the night reading the thread! I was so entertained reading about @BY Bob flock and I can't wait to see how everything turns out.

Anyways, let me get to my chicken story... I'm from Kauai, Hawaii. If any of you have ever been to Kauai, you know that this place is overrun with wild chickens - they are literally everywhere! Last May, I heard some cheeping coming from outside. I looked out my kitchen window and saw a little brown hen with 8 baby chicks in my front yard. I ended up going out onto my porch to feed them and was surprised that they didn't run away. They ended up visiting again the next day and the day after that and a few weeks later the mama hen moved into my backyard. I ended up naming her Chickadee.

After Chickadee's first group of chicks "left the nest", Chickadee went on to have two more sets of chicks. Her second batch of chicks hatched in late July 2020 and her third batch of chicks hatched on January 4, 2021!

Here is Chickadee with her first batch of chicks in May 2020. 6 of the 8 chicks made it to adulthood. Their names are: Sam, Peep, Daisy, Peapod, Twinkie & Twinkle.

Chickadee's first batch of chicks all grown up! Since they left the nest and went off on their own, I don't see them as much. Twinkie is the only one that still stops by daily.

Here is Chickadee with her second batch of chicks. This batch has 6 chicks, which consisted of 3 hens and 3 roosters. I've named them Roo, Pepper, Amos, Poppy, Cinnamon & Lulu. Poppy & Cinnamon still live in the backyard with Chickadee, but the others have moved to other parts of the neighborhood, but continue to visit my yard daily.

Here is Chickadee's roosters all grown up (Pepper & Roo; Amos not pictured).

Here is Chickadee with her third batch of chicks. She had 10 chicks, 9 of them which are still here. They are currently 11 weeks old and I think that 7 of the 9 chicks are cockerels 🤯

Here's a photo of batch #3 taken a few weeks ago.

Anyways, that's all I'm going to post for now. Someday I'll share more. But for now I wanted to introduce you all to Chickadee, the little brown hen that moved into my backyard and adopted me!
How wonderful for you. That's really lovely. It's so special when an animal chooses you. Does she leave you any eggs? (bonus gift! ☺️ )
What a wonderful story and she is such a beautiful hen. I have so many questions and look forward to learning more when you next post.
Ditto. :thumbsup

Monday Mugs

Hey Aussies! How am I the first to post a mug?!

Well I have a good excuse. I've been looking after my big sister and her animals for the last 3 days. She was diagnosed with appendicitis and went in for the operation a few hours later and needed a pet sitter and general dogsbody to help bring her things.

Sick Sunday, diagnosed Monday morning, operation Monday night, discharged from hospital Wednesday morning.
It was very sudden!

She's not supposed to exert herself for the next couple of weeks so I will be going down to help her with the heavy lifting now and then. So if I'm not around BYC as much, that's why. 😘
