Bunny is very grumpy but proud of herself. She had a 100% hatch and is a momma to 6 new babies. Let them out in the yard for the first time this evening and grabbed a few pics.

Oh my! I absolutely love the photos of Bunny and her babies!

And Butter's first baby is growing up. Mom changed her name from Pickles to Squirrel. Claimed her colors coming in reminded her of a red squirrel. I'm 99% certain she's a girl. Her hatch mate, is of course a boy. Neither one wanted to cooperate when I tried to get pictures so this is the best I could do.

I think the photos of Butter's chicks turned out great even if they weren't cooperating - sometimes those are the best photos!

I am happy to say that I am FINALLY caught up! Hopefully I won't have any more long absences from BYC so that I can keep up with the thread!

I enjoyed reading through everyones updates and flockservations. I'm sorry that some of you had injured chickens or had to go through chicken losses these past couple of weeks *hugs*

Also, @featherhead007 I hope that your hand is healing okay.

Also, just wanted to share some cute photos with all of you... because who doesn't love seeing cute photos of mama hen & baby?!

I am happy to say that I am FINALLY caught up! Hopefully I won't have any more long absences from BYC so that I can keep up with the thread!

I enjoyed reading through everyones updates and flockservations. I'm sorry that some of you had injured chickens or had to go through chicken losses these past couple of weeks *hugs*

Also, @featherhead007 I hope that your hand is healing okay.

A while ago we had a discussion on wet ground/dirt baths/ coccidiosis and chooks needing a dry space. My girls don’t really have anywhere to hang in the run if it’s wet; under the two hen-houses or the canteen, not a lot of space. So I decided to put a roof on two-thirds of the run so they can have a dirt-bath on a wet day. Hubby helped putting in some battens so the polycarbonate sheeting didn’t sag and we attached them to the wood underneath. Now I just need a really rainy day to see how dry underneath it is!

The weekend before, we put some more smaller aperture wire on the first third, so now the sparrows can’t get in when the gate is shut. Not sure how to keep them out when the gate is open and the girls are free-ranging.

Butter had another encouraging day today. I don't want to jinx it but I do feel she's made the turnaround and on the mend. She stood, unassisted for 10 minutes this morning. When she was outside she tried to dust bath, then on her own got herself half way into a standing position and took one step. That step is huge, it is the first time since the injury that she has tried to take a step. She got her belly full of grass and bugs I found for her. Offered her tuna again today, nope, not having it, its poison. Instead she's gorged herself on chick starter. Miss picky is driving me crazy on getting her to eat. She loves something one day, and the next will not touch it.

Thus is excellent news! You've done a lot and your efforts are paying off. Keep it up, Butters!

Also, the pics in the later post of her standing to eat is highly encouraging.

To be fair, it wasn't a macaw sized parrot but conures can be mean too

Okay...that probably doesn't make it much better. Idk why I thought it was a reasonable thing to wear a bird on my shoulder or head so often

Ok, this is not chicken related, but would you believe we’re expected to get down into the 30’s the next two nights? It’s usually a little cooler here than the forecast at night, so maybe close to freezing. So bizarre! This is California in late April. Chickens like the cooler weather (except for the cold mornings), but my tomato plants will not. I was running around looking for anything to cover them with. My tomato cages are too tall to put large trash bags over. My garden looks like a garbage dump at the moment with all the little tomato plant forts. LOL.

Hope the weather doesn't affect your plants much...there has been many years that our tomato plants have ugly leaf tips but still produce well!
