I count on these chickens, my family counts on my sanity without them, and my church counts on the eggs they all lay, to feed th homeless community. Jaffar is the roo, who tells all of them to do their best. (I can’t tell them, I don’t speak chicken)I know and I am sure it is hard for you, but we get to a point with our pets where we have done all we can and as sad as it is things will be as things will be (no, not proper "english")
@ChicoryBlue I have a hen “Tiny” who consistently lays soft or shelless eggs. She was a runt from my first hatch, and is now 3 years old, still laying small softies. (I didn’t think she was going to make it at first, and she started laying closer to 1 year old) The only fix I’ve found for her is fairly heavy calcium supplements, in the form of ground up Tums. Mint? No good... they won’t eat it. Mixed fruit? Too much citrus... the preferred flavor? Mixed berry. I powdered an entire bottle and give 1-2tsp in scrambled eggs as needed. not a good long term fix, and my girls are now on an 18% layer Breeder with the usual high calcium... Tiny just needs extra help sometimes.I would rather supplement protein at this point. Soft shelled eggs are very hard on hens. You could also look at feather fixer feeds that are higher in protein and have calcium. To me though calcium would be more important than protein at this point. She is not eating enough oyster shell on her own.
All the years I had mine on layer I never had soft shelled egg problems.
I’m having this issue too. Water and feed by hand, and somewhat forced on two of my Broodies. I think they don’t want to get off and poop. But they are sitting on what should be (mostly) viable eggs. So there’s an end in sight. Not like when yours decide to set on a nest without a chance of chicks.I think it was Shad who said he intervenes if a chicken goes 3 days without eating. She's not there yet.![]()

She is a very pretty cat and quite unusual looking with her blue eyes. Love the straight line down her nose.It appears Anjou might be my only hen. The cockrel fairy has been extra prevalent for me and @RebeccaBoyd this year. On a side note I haven't introduced Birch yet. She is five and loves to play soccer.View attachment 2694400View attachment 2694401
