It appears Anjou might be my only hen. The cockrel fairy has been extra prevalent for me and @RebeccaBoyd this year. On a side note I haven't introduced Birch yet. She is five and loves to play soccer.View attachment 2694400View attachment 2694401
I'm almost afraid to say this as I'm probably going to jinx it and have them all be late blooming males. Clover's 7 babies, who are 3 weeks old tomorrow, as of right now there is only 1 who I suspect is a boy. The rest, nothing, zip, zero as far as combs or wattles go. And the 1 suspected male, has a small comb but it is orange so that is the only thing that has my suspicions up.

@ChicoryBlue I have a hen “Tiny” who consistently lays soft or shelless eggs. She was a runt from my first hatch, and is now 3 years old, still laying small softies. (I didn’t think she was going to make it at first, and she started laying closer to 1 year old) The only fix I’ve found for her is fairly heavy calcium supplements, in the form of ground up Tums. Mint? No good... they won’t eat it. Mixed fruit? Too much citrus... the preferred flavor? Mixed berry. I powdered an entire bottle and give 1-2tsp in scrambled eggs as needed. not a good long term fix, and my girls are now on an 18% layer Breeder with the usual high calcium... Tiny just needs extra help sometimes.

You can all laugh at me here, it’s ok. It took me over a year to clue in, but my Isbar Tiny, who was supposed to lay green eggs, finally started laying shelled eggs. Do my eyes deceive me? They are pink! At first whitish just a hint, but sometimes a fairly vibrant pink... guess what colour mixed berry tums are? 🤦‍♀️ yep, so watch out for food dyes if you need to supplement calcium individually with OTC human meds. Reminds me of when I was “jaundiced” as a baby (there’s pictures somewhere) because all I would eat was carrot baby foods! Lol
Yup mixed berry us the kind I have! No I'm not laughing at you either, she loved it! Today I ground up calcium citrate & D3 tablets, which are white. :)

Tax of some kind. Today, their favorite place right now when out foraging. Hazel on what was their breakfast bar.

Today there was a small scuffle with Butters and Hazel. Heard sounds of "Yowza I found something really great and interesting" which got louder and louder then turned into loud boks and when I looked over they were jumping at eachother, ending in a chest bump and Butters retreating.

Butters is feeling better. Today she had a dustbath in the covered big run, fully rubbing her shoulders and neck under herself, and this evening she approached me peeping tunefully, and squatted when I moved and said hello, and let me stroke her! Her lack of insulating neck feathers was a disadvantage yesterday when out in the cold (35F) rain, the covering feathers were wet and she kept shaking her neck. There's nothing underneath and it must feel so cold!

Last bit: have you ever been sandblasted by a chicken? A few days ago they were dustbathing in dirt in a nice hole under the apple tree they've made and I was sitting nearby just a few feet away. They came over when they were done. I leaned over to pick and give them some dandelion leaves. Popcorn stood tall and vigorously flapped her wings and did a body shake. She was sideways to me. The force of the wind and amount of dirt I was pelted with was astonishing. Sandblasted! :)

Love it. Yes indeed I have been full-on sand-blasted.
I was lying flat on the ground plugging mouse entry points in the foundation of the Chicken Palace. I guess the Princesses thought I was dust bathing, so they joined me just above my head.
Not an experience I need to repeat. Though I appreciate that they were just being sociable.

Yes, yes I have. Snow saves it in her feathers until I am close I reckon 😂
