I read there is a lot of mercury in tuna plus a cruelty issue, so that's one fish I now avoid. Not that I'm up on all the latest news. . I was told that sardines are a little healthier. I need too do more research.

More Reasons Why Friends for Phyllis

I have not outlined all the reasons that led me to get more friends for Phyllis. This morning there was an example of all the things that have led me to this place.

Everyone should know by now that Phyllis is laying her eggs in an old deck box on the other side of the yard from the coop. She laid her egg early this morning. She gets out of the box and cannot see any members of the flock so naturally she does the escort call.

No one answers her.

No one.

If Sydney does the call, Lilly and Aurora for sure will answer at the top of their lungs. Who answers Phyllis?

No one.

It breaks my heart every time. Hence, more friends.

I’m soooooo behind (spent five days at a music conference) and want to catch up, but just wanted to share something with my chook friends. I was awarded a blue belt in Jishukan tonight (a mixed martial art) so feeling pretty chuffed.

The medicated feed I used was Amprolium based. When I checked with my Vet she said no problem if they were on medicated feed & being medicated @ the same time. It was a different medication, not that that probably makes much difference, & not being scientifically inclined I said, Oh, OK & did what she recommended. No~one was the worse for their dosage. At least I did know enough to ask as I'd read here not to give medicated feed while medicating for coccidiosis.

So you did not give Amprolium as their medication. My guess is you were using Monensin (Cobon) to medicate. It uses a different mechanism to kill the coccidia so you would have had a multiplier effect.

Monensin works by combining with sodium and potassium, causing the normal transport of these ions across surface membranes to fail. This kills the coccidia by not allowing them to regulate the movement of water in and out of the cell. Most likely causing them to pop.

From my somewhat basic research Monensin does not seem to be anywhere near as popular as Amprolium.

Why are chickens so mean?

Survival. Most of the animal word is cold and unkind. That is why we cling to the oddball stories where a mother hen is raising kittens.

It is hard because we have a tendency to anthropomorphize. Their world is not ours. They will be truly kind to each other in one moment and cut someone out in the next if they think it is good for the survival of their kind. They just don't see Phyllis as their kind.
