I have been unhappy that because of construction I cannot get any good photos of my Princesses. So instead I am sharing a video from the summer. For me this never gets old. After a hard day tilling, fertilizing and destroying bugs in the raised beds where I grow vegetables, the Princesses suddenly realize it is time to go home. In spite of the rather ungainly waddle they go really fast! It makes me laugh every time I see them go. Sad that now there are only 3 of them.

This is one of my girls in a diaper for house visiting. There are buttons for the back to slide folded paper towels in or out for changing. Easy disposable diapers for chickens. I've made one for each of my first six girls cuz they were in a lot!

That is very pretty!

I could watch them all day. What a wonderful video. I love when they make their minds up and run like that. I miss mine running to see me and worry that we may never have that freedom again if I can't find and dispatch what got Mal.

Maybe you just need to restrict their free-range time to when you are actually there. I was way more diligent last season weeding my garden because it meant I was there working alongside and watching over the Princesses rather than doing house chores. I don't think that weasel will attack when you are right there with them. Though as I previously posted I don't know anything about weasels so probably shouldn't listen to me!

That is exactly where we find ourselves today. They only got out yesterday because I was here. Unfortunately I need to work and can't just chicken sit in the yard all day. I also am not 100% sure it was a weasel. I am leaning that way but I don't know for certain. I have nothing on the cameras so far and no evidence outside of Mal herself.

The fear is real right now. It's my job to keep them safe. That is paramount.

I know there is one person at work who thinks I’m crazy for spending hundreds of dollars on a chook, they are just primary producers to her, and when they’ve stopped earning their keep, she takes them somewhere and abandons them to predators, just so she doesn’t have to pay anything to feed them or have them put down. :he

This is so not ok to my thinking. Even if they are production birds, livestock, food, etc and not “pets” or spoiled little kind-of-farm animals like mine, abandoning any domestic animal is Wrong. If you don’t want to pay for the feed then put them in the freezer for soup as humanely as possible. I also couldn’t justify spending that much on a single chicken right now either (our finances are a little too tight for that ATM) but I wouldn’t ever just dump them and wait for something to eat them as a solution. Have to wonder how your co-worker would do in the same situation? “Sorry, you didn’t meet quarterly productivity goals... here’s a one way trip to a remote corner of Nunavut with no winter clothing or food, good luck!”

What a great clip. I have to admit they do look funny running.
