Due to the hatchery mess up he never got his chicks. I did end up getting his girls, they just were not Marans like he thought they were. I'm making progress with them and they are opening up. I also accidently found out yesterday how to call them and have them come running. Stepped out on the front porch yesterday and spotted Branch. So I gave the call I use to have the silkie's come running which is "here silkie, silkie, silkie". Well someone came running alright, but it wasn't the silkies. The girls who were in the backyard came charging and met me at the bottom steps. The trick with these girls, is to ignore them and focus on the other chickens. That and their personalities are blossoming with all the free range time they are getting. Plus feather picking has stopped and pin feathers are already popping up everywhere on their poor bald heads.
It must give you a real feel good kick knowing you have greatly improved these girls lives :hugs

Elizabeth: March 2019 - September 2021. RIP.
Elizabeth died suddenly today. I am sad and will miss her.
Yesterday she was running around happily exploring the long grass.
This morning she was fine, though maybe a but a bit less perky than normal. By 5pm she was clearly not long for this world - her comb was turning cold and blue and she was only semi-conscious, and by 6pm she was gone.
You may remember she had been having trouble putting solid shells on her eggs for quite a while in spite of lots of extra calcium. It wasn't that she laid soft shelled eggs (though she did once) but more that the shells were so thin they would crack on impact. So I imagine the cause of her death was something reproductive.
Being thankful for small mercies, it was at least quick.
Hopefully you don't mind me posting some pictures here as a quick tribute to the lovely Elizabeth.

Looking back at these pictures I think she had a good chicken-life albeit too short.
Farewell Elizabeth, you brought me happiness and were well loved.
Rest in peace.
I'm so sorry too read she has passed. She lived a wonderful life in the chicken world you have so lovenly created for them all. :hugs

They are getting so big! You might have to put the brooder cam up on a brick to get their heads in the picture.
Looks like it’s time to add a pot of dirt to the brooder too! 😆
I am going to mount the camera to get it up higher. I have raised the heat plate and they will be getting a bowl of dirt but I also started taking them outside this evening.

Roosting is a little sad tonight without Elizabeth.
I think Elizabeth was the one that kept them together as a tribe. Everything was very calm today but they spent the whole day as two separate pairs.
Also, it turns out that four chickens is a lot less than five. It feels very empty in the Chicken Palace now.
😢
