Just so sad. I like the fostering idea. There is a chicken rescue in NJ that takes chickens when the town removes them from a family and she lets the families visit. I thought it was a lovely idea.

Yes, yours was one that appeared out of sequence. But it is all weird in timing. Consecutive posts timed 24 hours apart when you know that cannot be the case on this thread.
That may have more to do with quality of the ash. Potash (potassium hydroxide if I remember correctly) is made from soaking wood ash and water, filtering it, keeping the now caustic liquid. mixed with oils (like lard, tallow, coconut oil), you then get soap. (Simplified process). The best water to use is soft water (most ground water is hard) so rainwater, collected in a rain barrel. process involves putting straw (to filter the ash) in a barrel with a spigot at the bottom, adding the ash, then more straw to hold the ash down (dunno what kind of straw, just needs be clean), adding the water covering (probably to keep critters out), letting it soak, then draining it. Any wood ash will work, but better quality soap results when hardwood ash is used over softwood ash. wood ash can also be spread on the garden. I would bet that hardwood ash is better than softwood, but still effective. likely the same re: chicken bath too.
