A Day in the Sun

Yesterday, obviously prior to the Hawks arrival today, the littles were absolutely enjoying the sunshine. I took a bunch of photos of them enjoying themselves by one of the bushes.

Before I share those, compare their joy in the sun to this group of fuddy duddies hiding from the wind in the shade.

RC, I’d say definitely, for sure she’s adjusting her crop. It sounds like you’ve got a handle on it!

@Shadrach : question for you...I thought normally the upper beak is a bit longer than the lower one. Not so on this hen......is it because of trimming...or am I not maintaining my hens' beaks well/properly?

Can you use some super glue on her beak...and file it gently if needed...to repair the crack? I had a roo who was fighting and caught his upper beak on a roost....tore it off. I made a 'prosthetic' beak from the curved rim of a plastic container (yes, I know, I am not a fan of plastic, but didn't know what else to do). I oiled where I didn't want the super glue to adhere (the quick), and super glued the prosthetic beak in place. It worked to both protect the quick & allow him to eat some on his own. While this isn't the same, it might keep it from cracking more and give the bottom beak more integrity?

She looks pretty bright-eyed an alert...unlike a couple of the other red hens that seem hunched and unwell or unhappy.

Hopefully you will be able to nurse them to health...or at least make sure they don't suffer.

You artificial beak was really quite clever. For how long did it work?

This morning Plati was squatting and squat walked around when I went to greet her. Feet aren't in the ideal pose, but she is up and moving a bit.

Just wanted to brag that both Flash and Minnie had completely empty crops this morning. Flash seems to be fine and is eating. Minnie, not so much. But she seems happy and her body language is good.

Also, I didn’t get any photos, but instead of free ranging the girls after work, I sat with them in the run. They seemed to love it and I got lots of lap visits. It was drizzling on my way home from work, which is why I didn’t let them out. I didn’t want them getting wet so close to roosting time.

As soon as I got settled in my chair with a towel across my lap, it started raining heavily and I was glad we were all in together.

Don’t they? I find them sooo adorable! I was never really into Polish (sorry, Phyllis, Bob and Mrs. BY Bob), but there is something about these two that captivates me!

I just feel so somethingfor this poor little hen. She has improved and is still improving.
After lookiing at the last picture you can't tell me chickens don't feel empathy.
I've got three on the danger list. I'm hopeful but...

Polish were Mrs BY Bob's thing but I find them to really be special hens. All 3!
