I have 9 hens of laying age, 1 more reaching that age on another month. 10 nest boxes in 2 horizpntal rows with 3 dirt pots embedded below those. They still squawk over boxes, 1 occasionally lays on the ground BEHIND the pots and the other day I had 2 eggs on the ground in separate random spots with another broken. The broken one looked like it bounced off the edge of the lower bank of boxes. At a guess: 3 pullets all wanted the same box occupied by a 4th (2 eggs in A box). eggs dropped unexpectedly as they're still figuring the whole thing out.I do remember but will go back and re-read.
The question I am weighing up is whether to build more nest box capacity somehow, or whether this will be an issue regardless of how many boxes there are to choose from.
