I slowed the video down to quarter speed and re-watched it.
It looks to me like the hawk is going for the hens on the other side of a wire fence and hits the fence instead, then the rooster strikes while it is discombobulated.
It's hard to tell because of the poor video quality and the shadow of the tree trunk though.
Oh my gosh! I don’t see the fence! I’ll have to look again. Shad, you were onto something about something not being right. Please let us know how you saw that. It still seemed the rooster was trying to intercept a hawk attack, but maybe he wouldn’t have been so successful without the fence. It does seem odd that he didn’t call, but could it be that there wasn’t time? Do roosters typically call while they are chasing down a threat?

Gasp! I just looked back at the video, but didn’t get to the beginning. It brought me right to where I was toward the end last time I watched it. I don’t think that’s a rooster. Someone else already said that, I think, but I forgot to look back. I am almost certain that is actually a hen. Maybe that is a mama hen.

Now I’ll go look for the fence.

How is everyone doing in here? Sick right now. Hoping it goes before family Christmas party! Hope you're all able to enjoy the Christmas holiday. :). Photo of one of my cochins. Loved those little things.

BLANCHE IS GONE 💔
My best girl Blanche didn’t return from foraging on Saturday evening.
I knew right away it was bad news as she never does that. I took the dogs and searched our whole property but not a sign.
There were no particular tell-tale feathers I could discern, either, especially since all three white birds have been molting and the coop, run, and backyard area are littered with white feathers.
I can’t even describe my emotional state of mind.View attachment 2921002View attachment 2921003View attachment 2921012View attachment 2921013

I thought I already said this, but don’t see my post. I am so sorry you lost sweet Blanche!

Why stop at 2 new hens?
I'm stopping at 2 because I want to keep the number below 25. I have a feeling its going to take a bit to find exactly what I want so I'm starting the search now. There is one ad that intrigues me but it has to be a no go. A group of 5 paints that for the most part are gorgeous and just at a year old. The downfall, the breeder is getting out of paints and is insisting they go as a group and 1 of them is a Rooster. To top it off the Roo is a showgirl silkie. That is a hard fast nope, no naked necks for me even though the hens are lovely.
