Well as far as I know they go to Mexico area to winter. (I want to go to Mexico, brrrrr cold here hahaha).

Have seen them in Yuma AZ in the winter! Awesome!

I think those are the black vultures. The turkey vultures are definitely year round in NJ. I found a whole article about it related to deer carcuses on the highway.

Does anyone know what my ladies are saying here? Maybe @featherhead007 could check with Jaffar for me.

It was single digits in temperatures when I took this so maybe they are saying something like.....

Yes sounds like a version of a growl, I hear my gals make that noise also and everyone pays attention. The Rooster has a deeper growl and that also makes everyone pay attention.

Funny last night I was putting the drama queens to bed and usual chaos, so I started shushing to them going shhhhhhh shhhhhhh shhhhhhh and they ALL stopped, froze and didn't make a noise! At the time I didn't click in what it was but the sounds were remarkably like that! Here I thought I had figured out a way to settle everyone! Seems I was scaring them likely!

Nope definitely turkey vultures have a barn full of nests (ok 2 nests haha) next door, and I spend lots of time watching as the babies grow up, take that first flight (more crash), and soar in the sky catching thermals.

Sorry, I wasn’t doubting you had turkey vultures I meant that the ones that decamp are more likely to be black (at least around here). Apparently they live together a lot!

Don't have black vultures here, you're likely further south and what with global warming / climate change I bet they are staying around. I could use some me global warming here....

We have huge flocks of turkey vultures where I live (in a mostly wooded and farm area in Loris) which is thirty miles inland from Myrtle Beach. At any given time one can look up and see them slowly gliding in their signature circles. They do a fine job of keeping the roadsides and field areas clean, if you know what I mean.
They have an unsavory reputation but they are actually very nice birds.

You don’t find any coconuts on the ground do you ! They do a good clean up job!

Very helpful and I now know more of what to look for.
I think this one was a Turkey Vulture - it definitely had a 'V' to how it held its wings.

OK you are learning, yay, admit it! Watch their soaring and see how the V-shape makes them vulnerable to crosswinds - vultures appear very "unsteady" - they are tippy, one wing dipping a bit and then the other.
