Also there’s the whole wild bird issues… and I don’t know how bad your Barn Swallow infestations are but they are worse than the mice here. All our barns and outbuildings have big gaps. The chicken trailer is pretty small bird resistant, I’m just hoping for the best here and dealing with the mites etc as they crop up, but the bird flu is IMO more scary than the big “C”
It really is. Thankfully because of the hawks I have run most of the song birds away. The blue bird family is back and I won't chase them off as this is their home.

For anyone willing to narrow down the guesses on the chipmunk chick here is a video and a couple of shots. The pics are from yesterday - so much growth in 24 hours!

Oh my! I know I am very late in responding to this, but I must say your chipmunk chick looks so much like my rooster Gizmo when he was younger! Your chick pics makes me miss having little ones around!

I am quite relieved to see this.
After moving the babies into the brooder in the coop I was sure they had found heat and food but not so sure they had found the hanging water.
I had to be away most of today (just boarding the train home now) so was very glad for the remote monitoring camera. At least I know Lulu isn’t going to die from dehydration.

The starlings have arrived here and I’m viewing them with great suspicion… the local birds I’m less worried about, the ravens live here, and those little mooching junkos and finches… I literally have four barn swallow nests still in my house. Now the doors and windows are in I can finally remove them… 😂 I couldn’t when they still had eggs/chicks.

I hate that I have started being unhappy about wild birds. I would always enjoy watching the Canada Geese flying overhead, now I just worry about them pooping in flight (do geese poop and fly or do they hold it until they land??!).
Kris - did you mention finches because you have native finches? They are the only bird other than water fowl and raptors that I have read being mentioned specifically as vectors.
Right now it seems like it is mainly the Atlantic and Central fly ways. You are West of that aren’t you?

Hi, folks. I am very sad to report my sweet armpit warrior, cuddliest chicken ever Sunshine died this morning. Below is a count of how it went down. Don’t read if you are faint of heart.

She did not come down from the roost when I let them out and was in bad shape. I cuddled her and then took about ten minutes to pull together a carrier, towels, and microwaved heat disk so she’d have a safe, cozy place with her friends (I thought she would die while I was at work). When I came back out, she was even worse. I cuddled her some more and sang to her through tears. She suddenly flopped out of my lap. I picked her up and she launched again. The flock started attacking her, so I pushed them away as I picked her up, trying to be soothing. I told her “It’s OK, it’s OK” as soothingly as I could. She made a couple sad little sounds and died in my arms.

Rest in peace, my little angel. I love you so much.

:hugs :hugs She was beautiful and because she did hang out all snuggled in your armpit you know she enjoyed your comfort there at the end of her life too. I'm sorry you've lost this friend. :hugs :hugs

This is Bunny. And yes Bunny is on my couch on top of 2 loads of clean laundry that I have not had time to fold this morning. I've mentioned in the past that Bunny takes advantage every time she spots a open window or door to come inside. She is determined the couch is where she needs to lay her egg. It is almost 70 today, I want my doors and windows open. After throwing her out 10 times already we gave up. Threw a hospital chuck pad down and she is happy.
Cheeky madam! :love
