Oohhh, lovely pic! Are they becoming one big family?
And how is she feeling?

It seems like the Littles are working their way into the flock. Everyone except Lilly seems to be ok hanging with them now. I watched Hattie and the littles spend a lot of time together the other day while Lilly was laying her egg. Patsy is fine with them except when they peck at her butt. They still run away when the see Lilly and frankly she will still chase them.

I do think that Miss Aurora may eventually challange Hattie for number 2. She flared at Hattie on Monday. Hattie smacked her down but Aurora is feisty and I dont think that Hattie has the same feisty personality. We shall see but I'm keeping my eye on those developments.

I have a Lilly too... she is the leader of her little group which is my second batch of girls who are now 16 weeks old... she will harass anyone younger than her.. mercilessly :barnie... she is the pretty white one...

And Maleficent? What's she up to?:)

Mellie is so curious. She is into everything. She is like a dog with me. Follows me everywhere. Wants to know what's up. She is also lightning fast. She can zip by and steal food from others before they know what has happened. This is a great skill when you are at the bottom of the pecking order. She still jumps up on me and hangs out. Grooming and napping with me.

Maleficent is the kind of partner that my dear Daisy was. She and I are going to work on doing tricks this summer.

She is beautiful. I guess there is just an attitude that goes with that name. My wife says she is mean. I love her for being Lilly. Maybe she is mean but I remember that a year ago she was number 3 (last) in the pecking order. And that had been so for years. It may have been a rapid ascent but she is not going to yield to anyone.

Up, Up, and Away

I have been on the road for several days and the girls haven't been able to free range. I knew the trip was coming and wanted to make sure everyone would be comfortable in just the run and coop complex. Of course based upon flock dynamics, the main issue was keeping the Littles away from Lilly. I figured a roost in the run might really help. I have always resisted providing roosting space outside of the coop. I did not want to provide "unprotected" roosting for sleeping. This group has been sleeping together for a while now and I feel like I can trust them to go to bed like they should. So i added the roost.

As you may know, I have remote cameras in my run and coop so I can keep track of everyone when I'm not there and get my dose of chicken fun. I have been checking in on them and i finally caught a shot of my roost working just like intended. Here are the Littles on the roost while Lilly is eating right below them.

Success! :yesss::highfive:

Love your feeder! I have one just like it for my hospital tractor, a mayo bucket filled with gravel with a 3lb hanging feeder screwed onto it... I can just see Aurora telling Millie “stay very still... her vision is based on movement” like in the Jurassic Park movie :p

That is awesome! I am picturing the conversation and it is cracking me up! Lol.

Lilly does not seem to think "up" at all. She is a ground chicken for sure.
