I thought you might like that Bob. A couple a couple of kilometers down the track here have just taken in 6 rescue hens. I was down there yesterday with my Permethrin spray and Coccivex.
Rescues are so grateful! We did a batch of rescues when our kiddies were little & everything about their new life gave them immense joy. They laid well too but they were in a sad & sorry way when they first arrived.

My man can't get over how much our chickens seek & enjoy human companionship. They're not quite pets but they aren't really livestock either. They call out as soon as they see me in the yard & each will seek that special acknowledgement that I have seen them & know they are there. We do ourselves a disservice when we disconnect ourselves from other species.

I agree. There is something about being connected and accepted by the ladies that brings joy to my soul. I would not want to live without that feeling.

I'm like that with the wild life I see round here too ~ because I'm fairly chronic that way. The birds & animals know it's a safe space & while not tame are not totally afraid of us either.

I don’t know if you can see too well, but Chickie is fast asleep on the step with her head under her wing! She doesn’t mind a nanna-nap but I’ve not seen her do that before. I’ve not had any Isa eggs for a few days; either soft-shelled or broken. It was quite hot this morning, I’m just hoping she was taking advantage of the shade and not that she is feeling unwell. :(

That is the very definition of a safe space. Amazing.

I sat on my deck the other day, chickens clucking at my feet grooming themselves. 6 or 7 blue birds at the feeder at the edge of the deck or perched on the lights we have strung up, a cardinal and his friends at the other feeder and all I could think is that they all trust me and feel safe. There is just no better feeling.

Except maybe reading to your granddaughter. :D

Chickie’s got a temperature. :( I took her to see our lovely avian vet today after work and she said that her temp is high. I said I hadn’t seen an Isa egg for up to a week that wasn’t soft-shelled or broken. She said she couldn’t feel any fluid build-up, but wanted to give her a course of antibiotics. She gave her a steroid injection and Chickie was a real trooper, she didn’t even flinch! Whilst we were waiting for Dr Nikki to organise the meds, Chickie was standing in the bottom half of the pet carrier whilst I stroked her. She put her head against me, closed her eyes and had a nap, standing up! I wish I had taken a photo.
