When we lived in Iceland, the Liaison explained to us that there were no safeguards built into popular tourist sites. For example, you can walk right out onto the rock shelf of Gulfoss. There is no rope or chain, not even a warning sign. From there you could slip off several hundred feet over the waterfall into the rocky river below. (That didn't stop my husband and many others from walking out there.) The Liaison said, the Icelander's response to people who go where they shouldn't, just because someone hasn't posted a sign or put up a rope is, "stupid tourist". That was a running joke for us while we were there.

If you look close you can see the people out on that rock. A quick google search will show a photo of someone who fell off!

And in Switzerland there are no guard rails on those mountain passes. Maybe they figure it wouldn't stop anything going downhill anyway.

That's something. We have mountain lions around here but so few you never hear about them. It seems sad that they had to kill them but I get it. Crazy that they eating a person. How does that happen?

Isn’t that what lions do? Or are mountain lions not as dangerous as African ones?

And then there are the people that explore active volcanoes in New Zealand. I read the brochure for that tour. It was definately clear how dangerous going there was. So sad that happened to them but it was bound to happen some day.

Agreed. I've never understood the obsession with live volcanoes.

Edited to add: Mind you, we live on the rim of an extinct one. How our islands came to be.

The mountain lions here tend not to interact with humans. They are smaller than African lions and there is plenty of wildlife to eat. I think that is true in the western US as well.

You can lean over and look into Geyser in Iceland too. And people have died that way.

We have a cougar and a bobcat in our area. There has been no attacks on humans or livestock at all. But, boy you would think so for all the talk and fear around here.
